Maureen Joyce Kelley Martin was born February 2, 1936, to Bernice and James Raymond Kelley. She was raised in Castle Rock by her mother and stepfather Ray Watkins.
She graduated from Castle Rock High School in 1954 and was salutatorian of her class. Maureen met Russ Martin, the love of her life, at the wedding of two of her classmates. They were married on St. Patrick’s Day 1956. She and Russ moved to Seattle, where Russ attended University of Washington, and she made money typing papers. Together they raised Tom, Randy, Julie, Scott, and Patti, living in Kelso, Castle Rock, and finally settling in Washougal in 1966.
Maureen supported her active family and Russ’s desire to own a boat. Many wonderful hours were spent on the river with family and numerous lifelong friends. Maureen worked in the office at Washougal High School and was influential in the lives of countless students.
In the 80’s and early 90’s, Maureen and Russ had a series of moves with Crown Zellerbach. With each move she got to create a new home and learn to enjoy a new boat. As Russ retired, they settled in Olympia with the hope of lots of Puget Sound boating. Russ passed away suddenly in 2000, altering Maureen’s life substantially.
Maureen loved attending the events of her children and grandchildren. She loved music, dancing and watching sports. She spent her last years with her daughter, Julie, and Julie’s family in Houston where she received the very best of care.
Maureen’s family includes her 5 children, 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, May 6, from 1 to 4 PM at Orchard Hills Country Club in Washougal, Washington. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
