Emily Thomas became the first Gonzaga Bulldog to compete at the NCAA West Premilinary Outdoor Track and Field Meet, in Austin, Tex. The Camas High School graduate crossed the finish line in 24th place with a time of 35 minutes, 55.98 seconds.

PAPERMAKERS … keep running

Two Camas High School alums ran their way to the NCAA West Preliminary Meet in outdoor track and field. Emily Thomas, a current Gonzaga University redshirt sophomore, placed 24th in the western conference, running 10,000 meters in 35:55.98. Kayla Blackford, a sophomore at Weber State in Utah, placed 38th in the same event with the time 37:34.42. Blackford and Thomas happened to see each other at the San Francisco State Invitational in late March when they both qualified for the NCAA preliminaries and again in Austin, Texas, for the NCAA preliminaries race. They both hugged, wished each other luck and congratulated each other at the end of both races.

A total of 158 soccer teams will be in town this  weekend for the 10th Clash at the Border.

A milestone clash

A record number of 158 teams are expected to participate in this weekend's Adidas "Clash at the Border" soccer tournament. The previous record had been 144 teams, according to Tournament Director Jeff Castagnola. They will be arriving from areas such as Portland, Eugene and Bend, Ore., as well as Seattle, Yakima and Everett, Wash. The 10th annual event will be held Friday through Sunday, at several local fields including Skyridge Middle School, 5220 N.W. Parker St., and the fields surrounding Doc Harris Stadium, 1125 N.E. 22nd Ave., in Camas.

Future Lady Panthers venture to UCLA

The Future Lady Panthers recently stepped up their "off time" this summer by going to a camp and tournament at UCLA. For the past two years, the FLP went to University of Montana for summer camp. Coach Jason Blankenship was nervous this year sending his team to southern California, but UCLA assured him that his team would do well. They won four out of their five games. "And we definitely outplayed that last team," Blankenship said. In their last game, they lost by only three points, going 2-14 from the foul line.

Camas Athletic Hall of Fame 2012

The Camas Athletic Hall of Fame Committee recently announced the 2012 scholar athletes, individuals, coaches and teams that will be included in this year's honors. The induction ceremony will take place Saturday, Sept. 29, at Camas High School. Hall of Fame Chairwoman Marcia Johnson is asking for family members and friends to speak on behalf of the inducees. Rekindling an old flame

On June 12 at Cardon Field, the Camas and Washougal high school football players and coaches welcomed the opportunity to play a game against each other for the first time in nearly four years. "There's a connection with these kids through youth football," said Washougal head coach Bob Jacobs. "The rivalry goes back to like 1913. We don't want to lose that. We're just in a situation where we need to grow before we can get on a more even playing field."

The East County Knights were serenaded as champions Wednesday, at George Schmid Memorial Park in Washougal. The Knights slayed the East County Blue Claws in the championship game, by the final score of 14-10. The team of 9- and 10-year-olds finished the season with a record of 16-0-1.

Alexa Efraimson earned fourth place Saturday, at the Adidas Dream Mile in New York City. The Camas High School freshman finished with a personal best time of 4 minutes, 42.41 seconds.

A dream freshman year for Alexa Efraimson continued Saturday when she got the opportunity to represent Camas at the Adidas Grand Prix track and field meet, in New York City. The Papermaker held her own in the Dream Mile against 13 of the best high school runners in the country. She finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 4 minutes, 42.21 seconds. "The competition was there and I was able to do my best," Efraimson said. "It was like the perfect race."

A Spartan Sprint obstacle race will take place at the Washougal Motocross Park Saturday. As many as 6,000 competitors from the U.S. and several foreign countries are expected to attend. Racing occurs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a barage of entertainment, raffles, food, beverages, vendors and games.

Become a Spartan in Washougal

Take the natural elements like earth, air, fire and water -- throw in some barbed wire -- and you have the blueprint for a Spartan Race. The world's leading obstacle racing event comes to the Washougal Motocross Park for the first time Saturday. Admission is $15. Elite heats occur from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Regular heats of up to 250 competitors each follow every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event culminates with a lively festival of raffles, food, beverages, vendors and games.
