Helen Baller Elementary students take a break from training to run a 5K, to apply sunblock at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas. The students in third through fifth grades participate in the Girls on the Run International program, which seeks to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident.

Girls on the Run ‘flips the script’

The sounds of cowbells, hoots and hollers and shouts of encouragement recently filled the air at Camas’ Doc Harris Stadium. The enthusiastic applause was directed to students from Helen Baller Elementary School, who ran three miles around the track.

When it came time for Odyssey Middle School seventh-grade students Aleah Anderson and Grace Duffey to prepare ideas for a project titled, “What Would you Fight for,” they immediately decided to work together on a mission to fight against dog abuse.

2018 grads set to walk this weekend

Seniors from Camas, Washougal and Hayes Freedom high schools will walk in graduation ceremonies throughout the weekend, beginning with Camas High’s class of 2018 graduation at 7 p.m., Friday evening.

School construction on pace

Camas School District’s new Lacamas Lake Elementary school building is on track to open for the 2018-19 school year, and the district plans to repurpose the former Lacamas Heights Elementary building off Northeast Garfield Street for continued use.

Chamber names 2018 ‘Teachers of the Year’

The Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce has named its Teachers of the Year for 2018, and will honor Camas High School photography/graphic arts teacher Doug Huegli and Cape Horn-Skye Elementary first-grade teacher Darcy Hickey at an upcoming awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, at Camas Meadows Golf Club.
