Youth lead effort to create a drug-free community

One step at a time, local kids are working to help steer their peers clear of alcohol and drugs. "It's about trying to help kids who are abusing drugs or have family problems," said Skyridge Middle School eighth-grader Micaela Healea. "As you get into high school, there will be temptations. We would rather save a kid than lose a kid."

Maryalicia Verdecchia talks with students about her 2-year-old daughter Katie's rare brain operation. Despite having more than half of it removed in a surgery to help stop seizures, the toddler is excellent at spelling and putting together puzzles, and enjoys playing on her iPad, as seen here.

Living with half her brain, but full of hope

When Katie Verdecchia entered the world on March 31, 2008, she appeared to be a normal, healthy child. But by the time she was one month old, her parents, Maryalicia and Brian, knew something was wrong. Katie had violent seizures, some lasting as long as 10 minutes.

Washougal High School students Chandler Audette (left) and Paige Wade are hosting a benefit concert for their friend, Robyn Pfeifer, who has Crohn's disease.

A concert of inspiration

Paige Wade has watched her best friend, Robyn Pfeifer, battle Crohn's disease since the eighth grade. The girls, who are juniors at Washougal High School, have been best friends since first grade. Watching Pfeifer spend 66 days in the hospital during the summer of 2009 and endure six surgeries, inspired Wade to do something to help. "Seeing what she has had to go through really inspired me to do something," she said. "So I talked to my mom about how to get the word out and she suggested a benefit concert."
