Scrappy Washougal seniors are ready to pass the torch

If there was a basketball at the bottom of a barrel, Washougal High School seniors Sarah Brown, Maddie Down and Kendall Utter would scrap for it. Head coach Charlie Boyce loves their tenacity. In fact, he has become spoiled by it. "If I don't have practice started by 3 o'clock, they have it started at 3 o'clock," Boyce said. "Wins and losses won't define our season. We want to have a good time. By this time next year, these three girls will be gone and this coach will have a tear in his eye."

Camas soccer warriors never surrendered

Warriors love the big fight. The Camas High School girls soccer players were in one with Shorecrest during the first round of the state tournament Nov. 8, at Doc Harris Stadium. Down to the last second of double overtime, the Papermakers inched closer and closer to scoring the winning goal in a 0-0 contest. Just a few more minutes on the clock might have been their ticket to paradise. Anything to avoid the shootout, where Shorecrest emerged victorious by the score of 4-3.

North County swimmers make waves at state

Anna Panebianco made a big splash at her first high school state swimming meet, and so did three other Camas Papermakers. Panebianco captured third place in the 3A championship finals of the 100-meter backstroke Saturday, at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. The freshman finished with a personal best time of 59.92 seconds. "That's a swim where she really put her heart and soul into it," said head coach Mike Bemis. "She had been trying to break that one-minute mark all season. For her to be able to do it at the right time and in the proper place is really outstanding."
