This abstract piece by Washougal artist Beth Flannigan, "reminds me of the veins of a leaf," she said.

Abstract impressions

Self-taught Washougal artist Beth Flannigan never titles her paintings. "My abstracts are just that," she said. "I don't title anything because I don't want to influence anyone's opinions." Flannigan describes her painting style as both abstract and organic. In addition to not titling her work, she signs it on the back only.

Number of homeless students climbs

They sleep in cars. In parks. In shelters. On the sofas of generous relatives or friends. They are the more than 1.3 million homeless children nationwide. Of that total, more than 21,000 live in Washington state, according to numbers submitted to the federal government last week. Collected by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the numbers show that during 2009-10, the state reported 21,826 homeless students, up 5 percent from the previous year and up 56.5 percent from 2005-06.

Advanced Placement world history teacher Sam Greene engages students in a lively discussion on Friday. Camas High School's AP program has grown significantly in recent years. In 2010, 298 students took a total of 512 AP tests. Four-hundred-twelve had a score of 3 or better. That is in comparison to 2003, when only 60 students took the AP tests with 64.6 percent scoring a 3 or better.

Advanced Placement: More than just a test

"New perspectives on a diverse and complicated world." For veteran Camas High School teacher Hannelore Tweed, these are the opportunities she is passionate about providing to her students. Camas High School seniors Sara Slayton and Evan Klein are teaching a finacial literacy course to fellow students, hoping to give them the tools they need to be credit savvy when they graduate. The two are spearheading the project for DECA.

Dollars and $ense

With the average college graduate leaving school with more than $4,000 in credit card debt, it is clear that a greater understanding of finances is needed. However, for most high school students, it's not something to which they give much thought, beyond filling out applications for college financial aid and scholarships. Camas High School seniors Sara Slayton and Evan Klein are determined to change this.
