A concert of inspiration

Paige Wade has watched her best friend, Robyn Pfeifer, battle Crohn's disease since the eighth grade. The girls, who are juniors at Washougal High School, have been best friends since first grade. Watching Pfeifer spend 66 days in the hospital during the summer of 2009 and endure six surgeries, inspired Wade to do something to help. "Seeing what she has had to go through really inspired me to do something," she said. "So I talked to my mom about how to get the word out and she suggested a benefit concert."

CEF awards $25,000 in mini grants

Last week was like Christmas all over again for several local schools. That's because the Camas Educational Foundation came through with its annual "prize patrol," awarding 32 mini-grants to educators across the Camas School District. Grant requests funded items ranging from play equipment for the Papermaker Pre-School to seed money for student science research projects at Camas High School.

Camas schools earn statewide recognition

Three Camas schools were among 186 statewide that earned an Achievement Award, considered the highest honor from the state of Washington. Skyridge Middle School, Liberty Middle School and Camas High School made the list for overall excellence. The schools were judged on overall excellence, language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate, improvement and achievement.

School notes for Feb. 22, 2011

CHS presents 'Hello Dolly!' Camas High School Theater's performance of "Hello Dolly," will open Thursday. "Hello Dolly!" is the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, complete with upbeat songs and personality.

Students make ‘Snuggies for Service’ a success

The Camas High School Key Club recently raised nearly $700 on behalf of the Portland Rescue Mission. But instead of handing over a check, Key Club members got personally involved and used the money to purchase fleece to make snuggies for the homeless. Snuggies are wearable blankets with sleeves.

The CHS Science Olympiad team recently attended the Aviation Invitational Tournament in Des Moines, Wash., and returned victorious with first- and third-place trophies.

Science Olympiad teams return victorious from Aviation Invite

On Feb. 5 Camas High School sent two Science Olympiad teams to the Aviation Invitational tournament in Des Moines, Wash. They returned victorious with the first- and third-place trophies. Last year's Washington state champion took fourth-place, and last year's Oregon state champion came in sixth.

New members appointed to school board

There are two new faces on the Washougal School Board. Jim Gadberry and Terrie Hutchins have replaced Orlan Gessford and Tom Huffman, who retired at the end of January. Both seats are up for re-election in November 2011. Gessford served on the board since 1984, and Huffman was elected in 1985.

Celebrating ‘nice’

An affable man and his imaginary friend will grace the stage at Washougal High School during the production of "Harvey" this weekend. The Pulitzer prize winning play, written by Mary Chase, premiered on Broadway in 1944 and ran until 1949. It was also made into a movie, starring Jimmy Stewart. It is about Elwood P. Dowd, a likable man who claims to have a pooka, in the form of a large rabbit, as his constant companion. Since no one but Ellwood can see the 6 foot, 3 inch bunny, it is assumed to be his imaginary friend. He introduces Harvey to everyone he meets, much to the embarrassment of his social-climbing sister, Veta Louise Simmons.
