The Washington Association of School Administrators recently presented Community Leadership Awards to several outstanding volunteers who have gone above and beyond to support students and schools throughout the Education Service District 112 region.
WWU releases winter quarter dean's list Camas resident Hannah Glynne Manning has been named to the winter quarter 2011 honor roll at Western Washington University.
Stacy Yakouba used her love of popular culture to create a winning cartoon. The Liberty Middle School eighth-grader, along with more than 1,300 other students from around the country, entered the First Amendment Cartoon Contest. "Our teacher had the whole class do it, and I didn't want to get a zero for the unit so I just thought of what I liked and put it together." The contest was sponsored by the Administrative Office of the Courts in San Francisco, in partnership with the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
Yeager accepted in National Society of HS scholars Breanna Yeager, a Washougal High School sophomore, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. Membership in the group entitles qualified students to enjoy a varity of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications and more. Yeager participates in dance, cheerleading, and the yearbook. She will be the promotions manager for the Associated Student Body next year, as well as a varsity cheerleader.
Most 16-year-olds would be apprehensive about leaving everything and everyone they know behind to go to a foreign country for a year. But not Eidelynn Stagg. "I spent a summer traveling all over the country with my grandparents when I was little and I loved it," she said. "And I always have wanted to go outside the country to see more people and get a better understanding of where they live."
Excelsior student wins Watershed Reflections contest Travis Hibbs, a junior at Excelsior High School in Washougal, was selected as a winner in an art contest. His photo was chosen as the winner for the ninth to 12th-grade category in the Clark Public Utilities Stream Team 2011 Watershed Reflections Contest.
Fifty years from now, most members of the Washougal High School class of 2011 will be retired and many will have grandchildren, some close to graduating. As mind-blowing as growing older is for many teenagers, the fact of the matter is that it happens quicker than any of us expect.
Skyridge students to perform 'Guys and Dolls' Skyridge Middle School students will perform the play, 'Guys and Dolls' from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Camas High School, 26900 S.E. 15th St. Tickets can be purchased at the door and cost $7 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.
Throughout life, there are defining moments. These are the events in our lives that shape who we are. Our personalities, our fears, our joys, and our insecurities are defined by these kinds of transforming experiences that help guide our interactions with the world. Most people probably don't think much about the cumulative impact of these moments. They may not even recognize their significance at the time they happen. But 15 youth from Clark County's Juvenile Recovery Court and the "Strong Teens Against Substance Hazards and Abuse" peer education program recently took the time to do just that.
Time capsule ceremony is Sunday A time capsule containing mementoes reflecting the people and places of the Washougal community will be buried during a ceremony on Sunday, at Washougal High School. The event will take place from 2 to 2:30 p.m., at the WHS commons near the courtyard. Speakers will include Washougal residents Bernice Pluchos and Roger Daniels, as well as student Emily Carroll, who is organizing the event as part of her senior project.
