Washougal resident receives college honors Sarah J. Walker of Washougal attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the 2010-11 school year and completed the year with dean's list honors for spring semester.
Challenging. Rewarding. Enjoyable. That is how teachers Kathy Beckman and Penny Andrews describe their time in the classroom. Beckman is a reading specialist at Lacamas Elementary in Camas. Andrews is a fourth-grade teacher at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary in Washougal. Both have been named Teachers of the Year by the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Riverview Community Bank. Today, the two were honored at the annual awards banquet at Camas Meadows Golf Club, along with Business of the Year, Lacamas Community Credit Union, and Citizen of the Year, Carrie Schulstad.
Burgerville to donate 10 percent of proceeds to Camas library The Camas Burgerville, 518 N.E. Third Ave., will donate 10 percent of all proceeds from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday to the Camas Public Library.
When 16-year-old Washougal High School student Nani Sasaki first heard about the massive earthquake that hit Japan in March, she wasn't sure how to respond. "It was really sad," she said. "I didn't know what to think about it at first. Nothing like that ever happens in Washington. I just don't know what I would do in that situation." The 9.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the east coast of Japan on Friday, March 11. It then triggered a tsunami that produced waves estimated at up to 128 feet. According to news reports, the event left more than 10,000 people dead, as well as thousands who injured. There now are tens of thousands of displaced survivors.
Camas High School DECA, an organization of marketing students, has fared well in international competition this year. Nineteen students, a school record, qualified to participate at the International Career Development Conference, held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., April 28 through May 4.
Grass Valley teacher receives grant Second grade classrooms in the Camas School District annually put on theater productions of a bug-themed play called "Goin' Buggy."
Camtown, the city of Camas's annual youth festival, will mark 10 years this June. "We are looking forward to a fun event, rain or shine," said Krista Bashaw, special events coordinator for the city's parks and recreation department. "We always get great crowds no matter what the weather."
The Washington Association of School Administrators recently presented Community Leadership Awards to several outstanding volunteers who have gone above and beyond to support students and schools throughout the Education Service District 112 region.
