CHS students do well at science fair Several Camas students recently participated in the Southwest Washington Science and Engineering Fair. Eight projects were shown at the fair and many received awards. Here is how the students placed: Meghal Sheth, first in category: "Design and analysis of synthetic peptide based protein inhibitors"; Jon Bartlett, second in category: "Designing binding Interfaces for protein-protein interactions"; Noah Encke, first in category: "Using a cross-platform engine to develop an application for a client company"; Kyle Binder and Shicon Wen, first in category: "Effects of Motor oil on Pisum Sativum"; Sophie Shoemaker, first in category: "A recycled aguaponic system: The agriculture of the future."

Camas student earns his Eagle honors

Duncan Stuart of Camas has earned his Eagle Scout award, the highest honor the Boy Scouts of America offers.He was honored in a ceremony on Sunday, March 18 at Columbia Presbyterian Church in Vancouver.

Camtown poster contest open to local youth Entries are now being accepted for the 2012 Camtown Youth Festival poster contest. These must be turned in by Friday, March 30. Camas youth of all ages are eligible to participate in the poster contest. Winning designs will be used for Camtown promotional flyers, posters, etc. Poster designs must be drawn on white, 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper.

Tiffani Pekkala, 17, organizes an annual community blood drive. The Hayes Freedom High School junior has a rare genetic disorder that requires regular treatments of plasma to help her body fight off infection, and wanted to do something to give back.

Tiffani Pekkala is serious about her efforts to secure donors for the American Red Cross Blood Drive."I have bribed classmates to donate with food and movies," she joked.

The Camas High School Knowledge Bowl Team celebrates its third state championship in a row this past weekend at Marysville-Pilchuk High School.

It’s a three-peat for Camas Knowledge Bowl team

The members of the Camas High School Knowledge Bowl team are all smiles after capturing their third state championship in three years. The team traveled to Marysville-Pilchuk High School to compete in the 30th annual Knowledge Bowl state championship over the weekend. There, teams from all over the state competed at the 4A, 3A and 2A levels in three separate tournaments. The Papermakers beat out 17 other teams in the 3A division to secure a win.

Library hosts Hunger Games party The Camas Public Library is hosting a party for teens to celebrate the debut of the best-selling book “The Hunger Games” as a major Hollywood movie. The party will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 22. Teens in seventh- through 12th-grade are invited to come to the library for an afternoon of themed activities.

Maguire is semi-finalist in scholarship contest

James Maguire, a senior at Washougal High School, is a semi-finalist in the 43rd annual national Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship competition. The awards are granted to high school seniors for best all-around presentation about why they are planning a career in government service. According to a press release, the semi-finalists represent, "The most talented and accomplished of our country's young leaders." The foundation is located in Bristol, Bucks County, Pa.
