Letters to the Editor for August 21, 2012

This frightens me.

Land being decimated by clear-cutting I had never been to the Northwest until I moved here 12 years ago. I knew it rained but I also knew it to be a very beautiful place and assumed we would buy a house on a decent-sized lot, with decent-sized trees, and that our windows would be a decent distance from our neighbor's windows. What a naive assumption.

Chamber needs to support local businesses For the last six years Kidz with Ice has been applying to get into Camas Days. The reasons are always different as to why the Camas-Washogual Chamber of Commerce and Brent Erickson, its executive director, do not support this small local business.

I am not a long term resident and citizen of Washougal -- only four years and counting. But in that time I could see a community in transition.

Delavar contributes to government's dysfunction In his Nov. 22 Post-Record guest column, Washougal City Councilman Michael Delavar says he thinks Washougal's City Council should "ignore the conclusions of the strategic planning team" because "much of the work done so far has been based on a precariously unscientific survey." This is his response to the strategic planning team's second progress report at the Nov. 14 council workshop.

Entire County should vote on C-Tran tax increases There is no reason to be puzzled by the fact that voters approved the C-Tran Proposition 1 while favoring Initiative 1125 to limit tolling. If all voters where allowed to participate in the C-Tran vote, it's likely Proposition 1 would have failed. A successful C-Tran vote was made possible through a cynical gerrymander.

Are school buses always needed? I did not walk 10 miles in 5 feet of snow to get to school, but I did walk a mile through the stubble of a newly cut buckwheat field, and I did walk a mile to high school. With a 10-subject curriculum, I carried lots of books, heavy books.
