Teen-age stunt men

Joseph Harris could be considered a trend setter, among local athletes. As a Washougal High School freshman, he tried out for the varsity cheerleading squad and succeeded. That was last year, and it took some time for Harris to enjoy being a member of a predominantly female team.

Washougal utility rates could increase

Washougal residents could expect to see several increases in their utility payments next year. During a workshop last night, City Council members heard from Karyn Johnson and Samantha Holert, with FCS Group, a consulting company located in Redmond, Wash.

Candidates expected to turn out for forums

A handful of events will offer local residents the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates running for political offices including those in Clark County, the Third Congressional District, and the 18th and 15th legislative districts.

Jean and Donald Lewis, lifetime residents of Camas and Washougal, were known for their love of animals -- especially dogs, one of which is pictured at left.  It was recently announced that the couple, as part of their estate, left $100,000 to the Humane Society of Southwest Washington. The couple worked at the Camas paper mill from high school graduation to retirement. The monies will help retire the debt on a new animal shelter, which opened to the public in July 2009.

Humane Society benefits from local couple’s generosity, compassion

Jean Lewis absolutely loved dogs, and thanks to a donation to the Humane Society for Southwest Washington, that love continues even after her death. Through their estate Donald C. and Jean M. Lewis -- longtime Camas-Washougal residents -- granted $100,000 toward the completion of the Humane Society for Southwest Washington's capital campaign.

A future bride checks out the selection of wedding gowns available at a "Brides Against Breast Cancer" sale. Proceeds from the purchases pay for wishes requested by women and men with terminal breast cancer. Wish recipients include Jennifer Peters (not pictured), of Vancouver, who traveled with several family members to Disneyland in June.

Making Memories

Jennifer Peters had a summer vacation to remember with her children, thanks to donations made to the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation. Peters, of Vancouver, had been diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. On July 18, 2009, her doctor gave her a prognosis of one year to live. Peters, 44, spent four days in June at Disneyland with her daughters Briona Woodards, 13, and Kianna Woodards, 11.

Deep budget cuts in store for Camas

Camas leaders received some unwelcome news late last month when they were informed by the Clark County Assessor's Office that the city's assessed value would very likely take a steep dive in 2011. This translates into a severe decline in property tax income, which means the city is looking at a $1.6 million shortfall in the 2011 budget. Although early predictions pointed toward a decrease in assessed value, officials said the severity of the situation was unexpected.

Gerde plans to leave city council

A Camas City Council woman noted for her attention to detail and fiscal responsibility announced last night that she intends to leave her elected position at the end of the year. Helen Gerde, who is serving her 15th year on the city council, said she made the decision because she wants to spend more time with her grandchildren, including helping to care for her newest grandchild in Kirkland, Wash. "I never would have thought I'd end up doing this," she said of being a member of the city council. "I've enjoyed every minute of it."

Four injured in car accident near Camas

Four juveniles were injured Monday afternoon in a serious collision on Crown Road near Camas. At approximately 2:24 p.m., deputies from the Clark County Sheriff's Office and personnel from East County Fire & Rescue responded to the incident at the 2500 block of Southeast Crown Road.
