Papermaker bonds

The year was 1957. U.S. Surgeon General Leroy Burney linked smoking with lung cancer. Russia launched Sputnik I, and Leif Svendsen, Camas High School’s first exchange student, spent the year as a Papermaker. Flash-forward six decades and Svendsen is heading back to Camas to attend his 60th class reunion. This Saturday, Svendsen will serve as co-master of ceremonies for the reunion, along with his former classmate, Linda Freeman-Westfall.

Carver Ken Craig built much of his Washougal home himself, using reclaimed douglas fir and cedar boards. He describes it as a "work in progress." Placed beside his home are various carvings he has created over the years.  Craig turned his passion for carving into a career of sorts after moving to Washougal 10 years ago.

Coming of age

It’s not uncommon to change career paths as a millennial, but this trend isn’t limited to those from younger generations.

Tom West has been an artist since he was a small boy winning school coloring contests. He has a degree from the University of Missouri in graphic design, and has worked as a designer, art director, illustrator and gift product manager for 30 years.

It’s all about art in Washougal

Tom West was so talented at coloring contests in elementary school that teachers moved him into more challenging competitions so other students had the opportunity to win.

Camas Parks and Recreation is gearing up to host its annual concert series, which kicks off tonight with The Norman Sylvester Band, a well-known Blues group. Sylvester has his roots in the Portland area, having lived there since 1957. He has played more than 4,000 gigs, including every Portland Blues Festival since it's inception in 1987, only missing three total.

Memorable summer nights

With the long, cold winter just a distant memory, outdoor concerts will soon return to Crown Park.
