A woman who spent 3 1/2 years promoting concerts and celebrity appearances on an Army base in Qatar is a new staff member at Columbia Ridge Senior Living. Deborah Campbell is the community outreach director at the retirement and assisted living community, in Washougal. She is a former Department of Defense employee who provided marketing services for Armed Forces Entertainment. That included promoting appearances by Denzel Washington, Kid Rock, Washington Redskins cheerleaders and professional golfers as they traveled to entertain soldiers. Ivan Gering, co-owner of Papa's Ice Cream in downtown Washougal, plans to close up the shop on Saturday. He recently announced the closure, due to medical reasons. Gering, 70, and his wife, Chris, opened Papa’s, in August 2008, in the Washougal Town Square, at 1700 Main St., Ste. 130. Lacamas Community Credit Union donated 35 festive holiday dinner baskets to its members as part of its Community Partnership program. For the fifth consecutive year, the credit union's program allows members to nominate fellow members -- or themselves -- to receive a holiday basket with groceries and a gift card for a holiday dinner. Lacamas President/CEO Kathleen Romane created the dinner basket program in response to the recession in 2008. "This program continues to grow with this year being our most successful drive for nominations," she said. "This is just one of the many ways Lacamas gives back to the local community. These economic times have created a greater need. I hope those of us that are able will reach out to those in need this holiday season."
The Building Industry Association's Remodeler's Council has partnered with CDM Long-Term Care Services' "Community Partnership Initiative to provide assistance to Clark County seniors. This month members of the Remodeler's Council pooled its resources, including materials and donated labor, to replace a back porch and steps for a senior citizen receiving in-home care services from CDM. The old porch had become a safety hazard and could no longer be used.
A Washougal couple who purchased Squeeze & Grind 1 1/2 years ago recently bought the building that their business is in. Jeramy and Marcie Wilcox bought 537 N.E. Cedar St., in November, from Albina Bank, of Portland. The purchase price was $220,000. The bank had foreclosed on the property.
