A Camas man won $2 million in the Mega Millions lottery.

The man, identified on Washington’s Lottery website as “Kelly N.,” purchased the winning lottery ticket May 6 at the Fern Prairie Market in Camas.

According to a news release, the man is the first Washingtonian to win a second-tier, multimillion-dollar Mega Millions prize since the lottery game changed its rules in April to allow bigger prizes, better odds and faster-growing jackpots.

The Camas winner told state lottery officials he’d purchased the ticket during a routine stop at the Fern Prairie Market and returned to the market later to check his results.

“At first, the ticket scanner simply read, ‘Contact Lottery Office,’ which left him confused,” according to the news release. When he scanned the ticket again, the screen showed he’d won a $2 million prize.

According to the news release, the man “went straight to his car and called his wife to share the news.”

The man told state lottery officials he has not yet celebrated the $2 million win but plans to use some of the money to fund his daughter’s college education.

The Fern Prairie Market will receive $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

The newly revamped, national Mega Millions lottery game costs $5 per play and has nine chances to win a prize. Jackpot winners must have the correct Mega Ball number and five winning numbers between 1 and 70.

The current Mega Millions jackpot is worth $110 million, with a cash payout of $49.4 million.
