A Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputy shot and injured an unidentified man near a residence in the 2300 block of Northeast Everett Street in Camas Wednesday night.

The shooting victim received first aid at the scene and remains in a local hospital as of Thursday, Nov. 14. The involved deputy has been placed on critical incident leave.

According to a CCSO news release, the incident began around 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, when several residents near the 2300 block of Northeast Everett Street called 911 to report hearing gunshots. CCSO said 911 calls reporting additional gunshots continued for the next 30 minutes.

“At around 10:37 p.m., an unmanned aircraft system was deployed and located a subject outside a residence,” CCSO stated in the news release. “Law enforcement developed information that the subject was believed to be a person who was the respondent in a no-contact order that prohibited him from being at the residence or possessing firearms.”

According to CCSO, law enforcement from the Camas, Vancouver and Washougal police departments also responded to the scene.

CCSO said the man entered a vehicle in the driveway of a Northeast Everett Street residence around 11:03 p.m. and that law enforcement in an armored vehicle tried to communicate with him.

“As communication was being attempted with the subject, a deputy-involved shooting took place,” CCSO stated in the news release, adding that the incident was captured on the deputy’s body-worn camera. “Video of the incident will be released at a later time.”
The Southwest Washington Independent Investigation Team (SWIIRT), led by Washington State Patrol (WSP) is investigating the shooting.

CCSO said that, in compliance with state law, CCSO personnel will not be involved in the investigation. Once the independent investigation is complete, the case will go to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office for review, CCSO stated.
