The Washougal City Council appointed Washougal High School senior Emily Bishop as its first student representative since 2021 during its Oct. 14 meeting.

Bishop will serve a one-year term in an advisory capacity, but will not have voting rights on matters before the Council.

“It’s nice to have young representatives to keep us on track because you’re the future of our city,” Mayor David Stuebe told Bishop. “Being a part of this, taking what we do back to the school, your friends and (fellow) students, is a big (deal for) the City.”

Bishop told the Council that she’s the president of Washougal High’s National Honor Society club.

“I hope to start a pattern within Washougal High School of having students involved in the community, with the Pumpkin Harvest Festival and events like that that really make Washougal (a great) community,” Bishop told the Council. “I hope to bring the high school (students) to the people and bridge the gap.”
