ReFuel Washougal is seeking volunteers for its severe weather shelter, which is expected to open this weekend as the National Weather Service is forecasting low temperatures in the high teens and low 20s in the Camas-Washougal area for the next week.
The nonprofit organization opens the shelter, located in the Washougal Community Center, 1681 “C” St., from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. on days when temperatures drop below 30 degrees or snow or ice in the forecast and there are enough trained volunteers to staff the shelter overnight.
ReFuel Washougal will offer volunteer training at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11.
“We are having a sudden major dip in the temperature,” shelter coordinator Tia Billings wrote in a Facebook post. “At minimum, I am hoping to be open Friday and Saturday evenings. This all depends on if the weather stays that low and I have enough volunteers.”
