The Washougal City Council on Monday, Feb. 13, appointed Washougal residents Travis Dutton and Thomas Pastore to the city’s planning commission.

Dutton works as a policy analyst for the Washington State Association of Counties and previously worked “in government solid waste planning, communication and engagement with stakeholders, solid waste legislation and project management” for 15 years, according to an application letter.

“The ability of a city to grow, retain its soul and identity, and provide a safe, comfortable quality of life for its residents is a challenge I would like to be part of solving,” Dutton wrote. “… I have a solid waste-focused background, (but) I am not pursuing this role solely to focus on solid waste topics. Washougal has big plans to increase mobility, sustain the infrastructure needed by the community, and the implementation of an exciting strategic plan molded by its residents. I see this as an opportunity to support every aspect of Washougal’s growth. My professional roles have provided me with experience assessing large challenges and solutions holistically, developing effective working relationships and communicating with peers, interested residents, state legislators and analysts, and elected officials.”

Pastore has worked as a public benefits specialist, career coach, vocational rehabilitation therapist and teacher. He was named as the city of Washougal’s Volunteer of the Year in 2019.

“I have multiple years of positive customer service in the medical and educational fields,” he wrote in an application letter. “I have strong verbal and written communication skills, expertise in supervision, functioning independently and satisfactorily under stressful periods interacting with the public, performing as a positive team member and leader, experience teaching computer applications. I believe that my experience and flexibility are keys to providing you with a dedicated and responsible commissioner. … I have a proven record of achievements which will allow me to make major positive contributions to your agency.”

The City is still looking to fill one vacant position on the planning commission, which makes recommendations to the Council on rezone applications and legislative items such as vision statements, comprehensive plan amendments and code amendments.
