Investigators believe a woman found dead on a vacant Camas property earlier this month may have been the victim of a murder-suicide.

A Camas real estate agent leading a tour of the property near Northeast Winters Road and Northeast 86th Street in Camas discovered the body of Melissa J. Stephan, 55, on Oct. 9. Her cause of death was later ruled homicide by gunshot wound.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office said on Thursday, Oct. 20, that Melissa Stephan and her wife, Ruby M. Stephan, 48, had recently moved from Texas to Oregon City, Oregon. Investigators have provided no explanation for why Melissa Stephan’s body was found at the rural Camas property.

On Oct. 10, investigators discovered Melissa’s wife, Ruby Stephan, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, inside a hotel in Beaverton, Oregon.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU) said Thursday that it is working with Beaverton Police Department detectives, and will provide additional updates when available.
