The city of Washougal and East County Little League will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the George Schmid Memorial Ballfields construction project and the start of the 2022 season at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 22.
The $2.9 million project brings a third baseball/softball diamond to the park, as well as a variety of enhancements, including parking lot paving, field and sight lighting, a concession stand and restrooms.
The complex “will now be able to support tournaments, bringing economic benefits to Washougal,” according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.
“It will be fantastic,” Mike Plinski, the former president of East County Little League, told the Post-Record in 2019. “It will help make the venue more attractive to hosting tournaments, which would pull in families from outside the area, who would then support Washougal businesses. A nice sports complex could also be another attraction for families who want to move to the area.”
The park is located at 4855 Evergreen Way in Washougal.
