Appreciate Battle Ground’s position on firearms law
This month, the mayor of Battle Ground announced his council’s decision to allow courts to interpret I-1639, which imposes common-sense restrictions on firearms to stem gun-related violence. To uphold the fragile underpinnings of our democracy, great care must be taken by public officials to adhere to the rule of law, even in the face of boisterous critics. In our system, only a court of law can review the constitutionality of a law. Neither public servants nor citizens can pick and choose which laws to follow. I appreciate the council’s adherence to the laws of our land and their oath of office. Residents on either side of the debate can work to maintain or alter existing firearm laws as they see fit.
