The Camas Little League 10U All-Star baseball team, which is made up of the top players ages 8-10 years old in the league, defeated Fort Vancouver on Fort Vancouver’s own field on Friday, June 29 to win the District IV Championship. The Camas All-Stars started the double elimination tournament on June 23 with convincing wins over Cascade, East County and Fort Vancouver, before losing a close contest to the Fort Vancouver All-Stars on June 28. It set up the title game between the same two teams.
Jax Owens was the starting pitcher for Camas and threw a shutout the first three and two-third innings. Camas was up 6-0 when Owens left the game after throwing 68 pitches. Little League rules prevent pitchers from throwing more than 75 pitches in a game. Lincoln Fogle pitched the fifth inning for the Camas All-Stars. The Fort Vancouver team managed to rally, scoring four runs. That’s when Maile Wong, the lone girl on the Camas All-Star team, who usually plays second base, entered the game in the final inning as pitcher. She faced three batters and managed to get outs on all of them — one, two, three to clinch the championship.
“This is a team that truly trusts each other and wins through good solid defense,” Brian Owens, one of four coaches on the Camas 10U All-Star team, said.
Now, the Camas team moves on to compete at the state tournament in Lynnwood, Washington, which kicks off Saturday, July 7.
