Edwyna “Eddie” McAninch
July 7, 1927 ~ January 18, 2017
Surrounded by family members, PeaceHealth Hospice, and the caring staff at Prestige Care in Camas, WA, Edwyna “Eddie” McAninch passed away peacefully. She was born on July 7, 1927, in Beaver Falls, PA, to Charles H. and Edwina W. Osborne. They moved to Mt. Lebanon, PA, circa 1937.
Ed and Eddie first met singing in the church choir while in high school. Eddie graduated from Denison University (Granville, OH) and earned her nursing degree from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
After WWII, Ed and Eddie were married in 1950. She served as a Public Health Nurse helping to put her husband, Ed, through medical school in Philadelphia. Together they moved to Seattle, WA, where she worked as an RN. They settled in Camas, WA, in 1953 where she served as a volunteer community nurse, school assistant, and began raising their family.
Eddie’s first love, besides Ed and family, were the trails of the Columbia Gorge and the backcountry of Washington and Oregon. There she organized and conducted many hiking adventures. She was a self taught authority on the wildflowers and geology of the area.
Adventure was a large part of Eddie’s life, whether it took her to the trails of the Columbia River Gorge, Baja, Mexico, or the Grand Canyon where she lived for months and hiked over 300 miles. All told she touched six of the seven continents, missing only Africa.
She is survived by her husband, Edward, M.D.; and three children: Malcolm, M.D. (Janeen) of Portland, OR, Wendy, M.Div. of Ashland, OR, and Gregg, M.D (Carrie) of Carson City, NV; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Eddie was preceded in death by her parents; her younger sister, JoAnn Barsumian; and her infant daughter, Julie.
In keeping with Eddie’s love of the environment, a memorial will be held on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Camas, WA, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following.
