Winter weather leads to a late start for Washougal schools on Monday

Sleet is expected to change to rain by 8 a.m.

Slippery roads and limited visibility Monday morning have prompted Washougal School District officials to institute a late start.

All schools will begin classes two hours late, and buses will be on snow routes. There will be no Clark County Skills Center bus and no morning Community Education preschool or special education preschool.

The SPACE before- and after-school care program will open at 8:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service’s Portland office issued a winter weather advisory for the Portland and greater Vancouver areas through 8 a.m. Monday.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain have already been falling in the area this morning. There could be a half-inch to 1 inch of snow, and one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation.

Forecasters expect the precipitation to turn to rain around 8 a.m.

Washougal students have two more days of school until their holiday vacation begins on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Classes then resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Today is the first day of winter break for students in the Camas School District. They will also return to school on Jan. 3.
