Rylan Thompson has never forgotten his loss to Taggart Hartwig in middle school.
Since joining the high school ranks this season, the Camas freshman is becoming a thorn in the side of his rival from the west end of Lacamas Lake.
Thompson defeated Hartwig for the third time in a row to become the 126-pound 4A district champion Saturday, at Camas High School. The Papermaker took the Titan down in the first round and never relinquished his advantage, winning 4-2.
“I knew I could hold him down. I just had to have more heart than he did, and want it more than he did,” Thompson said. “I never thought I would get this far as a freshman. I’m going to region. Now, I got to make it to state.”
Thompson will have an opportunity to wrestle for a ticket to the Tacoma Dome Saturday, at Kent Meridian High School. Bryant Elliott, Triston Groth, Max Grimes, Dominic Delgado and Sam Malychewski will join Thompson in Kent. Elizaveta Foat, Lacy Dunlop and Bailee Thompson are off to the girls regional tournament Saturday, at Kelso High School.
Elliott and Tommy Strassenberg, of Union, tangled for three overtime rounds, before Strassenberg emerged with the 145-pound championship medal on a 5-4 victory.
