Journey Theater classes to begin

Registration is now open for Journey Theater Arts Group acting classes and the production of Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” for kids ages 6 to 18.

Classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 7. The audition day is Friday, Jan. 10.

Library to show winter break movies

The Camas Public Library, 625 N.E. Fourth Ave., is hosting free winter break movies. Everyone is welcome and free popcorn is provided. All shows begin at 2 p.m. Movies include:

Epic: Friday at 2 p.m. (PG). A teenager finds herself changed into a tiny person in a forest, where a raging battle between good and evil is taking place. Based on the book “The Leaf Men” and “Brave Good Bugs” by William Joyce.

Despicable Me 2: Monday at 2 p.m. (PG). Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help deal with a powerful new super criminal.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Friday, Jan. 3. (PG-13). When her mother disappears, Clary learns that she is descended from a line of warriors who protect the world from demons. She joins forces with others like her and heads into a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld. Based on the book by Cassandra Clare.

Local students advance to national sales competitionThe Washington State University Vancouver Professional Sales Program held its annual competition last month, two Camas students are advancing to national and regional levels.

Christina Price, one of the top two winners, will advance to the National Collegiate Sales Competition in Kennesaw, Ga., in March. In addition, Price also received a Herman Miller Aeron chair donated by Workplace Resource of Oregon.

Shelby Meader will advance to the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition in Chico, Calif., in April.

At the WSU contest, 22 students competed by performing sales presentation role-plays. Thirty-eight sales and sales management professionals representing 25 area companies served as buyers and judges for the role-plays.

Lacamas Heights Elementary School celebrates
50 years

Lacamas Heights Elementary School students and staff will be counting their leopard spots back 50 years as they celebrate the half-century of the school’s existence.

A formal celebration will take place Friday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Lacamas gym, 4600 N.E. Garfield St., Camas.

There will be former teachers, students and possibly the school’s first principal, Gale Marrs, in attendance.

“The Lacamas Story,” a short film, will premiere also that evening and include photos and interviews.

Clark College Jazz Fest
begins Jan. 30

Three full days of big band jazz will take place at the 52nd Annual Clark College Jazz Festival.

This historic community event will take place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Jan. 30, 31 and Feb. 1, in Gaiser Hall on the Clark College campus.

Sixty middle and high school jazz ensembles are scheduled to perform in this year’s competition with trophies presented to the top three jazz ensembles for all divisions. Individual outstanding musician awards will also be presented at the end of each day’s preliminary competitions.

At the end of Saturday evening, the Dale Beacock Memorial Sweepstakes Award will be presented to one outstanding band selected from the entire festival.

Preliminary competitions for the 2014 festival will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day starting on Thursday with middle schools.

On Friday the A and AA high school division jazz bands will compete with AAA and AAAA high school jazz bands taking the stage on Saturday.

Finals competitions will begin at 7 p.m. all three evenings with trophies presented at the end of the evening.

The Clark College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Festival Director, Rich Inouye, will perform at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, noon and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, and noon on Saturday.

The 2013 Sweepstakes Band, Roosevelt High School Jazz I from Seattle, WA under the direction of Scott Brown, will hold the spotlight on Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 per day. Clark College students and children under 12 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free of charge.
