The two rival high schools located on opposite shores of Lacamas Lake clashed inside the Camas warehouse Wednesday.
Sydney Allen delivered 11 of her team-leading 15 points in the second half to propel the Papermakers to a 52-38 victory over the Union Titans. She also had four rebounds and four assists in the game. Jenka Staisna added 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Lauren Neff notched 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Papermakers held the Titans to just four points in the fourth quarter.
“We are learning to play well with each other. It’s all about knowing where your teammates are going and trusting them to be there,” Allen said. “If I was driving with the ball, I knew Lauren or another post would be there to dish it to or grab the rebound.”
Staisna made a strong first impression for Camas. The 6-foot-2 junior, who plays center, is a foreign exchange student from Slovakia.
“The game of basketball here is awesome,” Staisna said. “The team is so close. It feels like I’ve known these girls for like 10 years. I can’t wait for the next game.”
Camas kicked off league play Monday, by hosting Kelso. Kendra Preuninger scored 10 of her team-leading 15 points in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on a 52-35 victory for the Papermakers. Allen added 13 points and Tatum Schroeder chipped in 10.
