CHS students (l-r) Jacob Freedman, Chris Grote, Captain Ryan Gompertz, Nicholas Lim, Alec Maier, and Chris Emmet successfully defended their state title at the tournament in Richland, Wash. last month.

Camas Knowledge Bowl participants have won the state championship two years running.

The last weekend in March, the Papermakers traveled to Richland, Wash. to compete in the 3A state tournament.

“This group of six seniors did a fantastic job, as they successfully defended their title,” coach Dale Croswell said.

Eighteen teams took part in the competition, which was held March 26 at Hanford High School. The teams were divided into two, nine-team divisions for the preliminary rounds, which included a written round and four oral rounds, each with 50 questions.

The Camas team won its division, which automatically qualified them for the semifinal round in the afternoon.

In the semifinal round, Camas defeated two other teams, which advanced them to the championship round against Charles Wright Academy, from Tacoma

“After a hard-fought round, the team from Camas prevailed to claim the crown,” Croswell said.

“I am very proud of these young men,” he added. “They have represented themselves, their school, and their community very well.”

Based on their championship, the team may be invited to make a return trip to compete in a national tournament near Washington D.C., which will be held in early June.
