Hathaway principal receives honor

Hathaway Elementary School Principal Laura Bolt was recently recognized as a “State Principal of Distinction,” for the Columbia River region on Oct. 4 at the state principal’s conference in Bellevue, Wash.

Eighteen principals throughout the state of Washington received this honor, sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Preschool Childfind screening set

There will be a free screening for children aged birth to 21 years old who reside in the Camas School District boundaries on Wednesday, Jan. 12 by appointment only. Results are confidential and are discussed with parents only. For an appointment, call the Special Services Department at 833-5570.

WSU Vancouver students demonstrate sales skills

The college of business at Washington State University Vancouver held its sixth-annual Professional Sales Competition Dec. 3.

The competition served as a qualifier for two intramural competitions to be held in the spring.

Participants in the competition were selected from the top performers in sales classes at WSU Vancouver over the past year. The students competed in mock sales call role playing. Sales professionals from the Portland/Vancouver business community served as buyers and judges.

The top two performers, Tracey Rushton and Kristen Kadow, qualified to represent WSU Vancouver at the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC), which will be held at Kennesaw State University in Georgia in March. Rushton and Kadow also won classic Herman Miller Aeron chairs contributed by Terry Wren, president of Workplace Resource of Oregon.

The next six top performers, Lauren Tyksen, Yan Doroshkin, Samantha Goelze, Veronica Ovdiyenko, John Won and Kim Wilson, qualified to represent WSU Vancouver at the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition (WSCSC) at Chico State University in California in April. Lauren Tyksen, third-place overall, is graduating this month and consequently will not be eligible for the WSCSC. John Won will take her place on the team, and Kim Wilson will serve as an alternate for both competitions.

Judges represented companies such as Airgas, Consolidated Electrical Distributors (CED), Country Financial, Enterprise, Fisher Investments, Nautilus, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Symantec and Workplace Resource of Oregon (Herman Miller distributor). These companies and a few more participated in the College of Business’ second Meet the Firms career fair on the same day as the sales competition.

Host families needed for 2011-12 school year

Host families who reside in the Camas or Washougal school district boundaries are needed for high school foreign exchange students for the 2011-12 school year.

Students are coming from the following countries: Germany, Brazil, Sweden, Spain, Vietnam, Austria, Denmark, South Korea, China, Norway, Belgium, Thailand, Japan and France.

The students have good English skills, full health insurance and their own personal spending money.Host families do not need to have teenagers of their own; young families as well as empty nesters are excellent high school student hosts this year.
