A fire broke out at Klickitat Park in Northwest Camas early Thursday morning.
According to Camas Fire Department Capt. Chuck Bettis, emergency crews were dispatched to Northwest McIntosh Road and Klickitat Street at 12:52 a.m., and arrived on scene a few minutes later. They found the park’s plastic play structure and the wood chips surrounding it totally engulfed in flames.
Two CFD fire engines carrying six firefighters and one battalion chief were on scene. Contained within a matter of minutes, the fire at the neighborhood park did not spread to any other structures, or surrounding homes.
Bettis said fire officials suspect the blaze was set intentionally, although the specific cause is unknown. Deputy Fire Marshal Randy Miller is currently investigating the incident.
City officials estimate the loss at approximately $30,000.
The 9-acre Klickitat Park, which opened to the public in 2006, includes an open play field, basketball court, discovery garden, trails, open space, a bathroom and a picnic shelter.
