Washougal’s wrestling pedigree goes back decades, but it’s not just about the boys.
Just two days after winning its ninth consecutive 2A GSHL title with a 46-27 win over Woodland, the Washougal boys wrestling team won the District 1 sub-regional tournament at Hockinson High School on Feb. 8. Not to be outdone, the Panthers’ girls also won the top prize at sub-regionals.
Before the start of the Washougal girls basketball team’s Feb. 10 home game against R.A. Long, the Panthers honored McKinley Stotts, their lone senior, for her hard work during the past four years.
It takes a lot to impress head Camas boys swimming and diving coach Mike Bemis, a man revered by athletes for his caring, “tough-love” philosophy.
The yearly battle between the Camas and Union boys wrestling teams is always their biggest dual meet of the season and usually decides the 4A Greater St. Helens League title. That was the case once again Jan. 29, when the Titans won their eighth league title in nine years on the Papermakers’ mat in the Camas High School gymnasium, known in wrestling circles as “The Warehouse.”

In a midseason battle between two of Washington’s best 2A girls basketball teams, Washougal controlled the tempo and beat visiting Port Angeles 65-54 on Saturday, Jan. 25.
Washougal’s basketball culture is attracting new fans to the stands following a remarkable metamorphosis within Washougal High School’s hoops programs.
