Answers still needed in Washougal

After many months of being in limbo, Washougal Mayor Sean Guard officially announced last night that the city finally found the person who would permanently step into the finance director position. With council approval, Jennifer Forsberg will begin her work at the city of Washougal next week. With experience in the state auditor's office and credentials that seem stellar, she looks like a really good fit to lead the city of Washougal toward a more positive financial future.

A crowning achievement

The first event being organized in anticipation of this year's Camas Days festival is fit for kings and queens. The crowning of the 2010 Camas Days Royal Court, an honor that recognizes local senior citizens for their community involvement, is set for Wednesday, July 14. This year's honorees are Robert and Gail Hitchcock of Camas and Bernice Pluchos of Washougal. Pluchos, a longtime resident, has been involved in a variety of activities ranging from helping to establish the Two Rivers Heritage Museum, the Two Rivers Historical Society and a reading program at Washougal High School to more recently being a founding member of Concerned Citizens In Action, a government accountability non-profit group. She has also been dedicated to the preservation of the Parkersville National Historic Site in Washougal.

Photographers show there’s much to love about Camas

What do you love about Camas? That was the question posed by the staff at the Camas Public Library, who challenged local amateur photographers to hit the streets, cameras in hand, and document the interesting, unique, strange and beautiful things that make Camas stand out from the rest. The results of this challenge are now on display at the Second Story Gallery at the library, in a show that features more than 25 entries from 13 amateur photographers as young as 9 years old.

Senior citizens are active

When you really take a close look, senior citizens are truly the backbone of our society. Many have contributed immensely throughout their lifetimes. Whether through a career, raising a family, or community outreach, in their possession are the life experiences, knowledge and wisdom that most of us are working toward gaining -- mostly through trial and error -- whether we want to admit it or not.

Kerianne Christie of Titania Blossoms shows off one of the skirts she created from "upcycled" materials. Christie has had the opportunity to visit locations around the world with her husband who travels as part of his job. As a result she has picked up some unique fabrics from locations including Egypt and Spain. The name of her business comes from the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Christie's products can be found at www.titaniablossoms.etsy.com.

Bits & Pieces

As soon as she saw Scarlett O'Hara reach out and grab the emerald green velvet drapes from the parlor window, and have them transformed into a stunning gown with gold trim, Kerianne Christie was hooked. "That opened up the whole world for me," she said of the classic scene from "Gone with the Wind." "Ever since then, if it's fabric, it's fair game." That initial spark of interest traveled a winding path that ended up on display last weekend at the Recycled Arts Festival in Vancouver. Christie, a Washougal resident, is the owner of Titania Blossoms, an online "upcycled" clothing business. She offers an array of stylish dresses, shirts, skirts and pouches -- all made by hand from materials that range from second-hand pillowcases and fabric samples to old shower curtains, drapes and tablecloths. Material from several different sources is often combined to create one "new" clothing item.

Officials urge residents to celebrate the 4th safely

Although the weather certainly hasn't been indicative of it, the Fourth of July holiday is right around the corner and local officials are gearing up for annual community celebrations and regulation enforcement. Fireworks go on sale Monday. Local police and fire officials say they will be on patrol to make sure residents celebrate Independence Day safely and legally. The city of Camas follows state guidelines when it comes to fireworks laws and regulations. That means legal fireworks can be discharged from Monday, June 28, to Monday, July 5. The Camas fire marshal and police officers will be canvassing the streets on July 4, and a Camas Fire Department brush rig will be making the rounds so that it is readily available in the event of a fire.
