Range shooting at Wildlife League can continue

Trap shooting will continue to be allowed at the Camas-Washougal Wildlife League -- at least for the time being. The Camas City Council gave the go-ahead last night for the longtime local club located at 811 S.E. Leadbetter Road to continue its regular operations as members work with the surrounding property owner CJ Dens Land Co., and the city to produce an agreement that will layout a firm time line as to when shooting will cease for good.

C-W officials look to form economic development commission

Elected officials from the cities of Camas and Washougal, and the Port of Camas-Washougal are hoping local residents and business leaders will turn out for the next joint economic development meeting. The event, set for Monday, Sept. 20, at 4:30 p.m., at the Camas Public Library, will be highlighted by an announcement regarding the formation of a locally focused economic development commission.

Pictured is an aerial view of the Camas-Washougal Wildlife League clubhouse and shooting range, located at 811 S.E. Leadbetter Road. Previously located in unincorporated Clark County, the club is in danger of closing because it was recently annexed into Camas city limits and would fall under code that makes discharging a firearm illegal.

Camas-Washougal Wildlife League’s days may be numbered

A flip through the pages of the Camas-Washougal Wildlife League's scrapbook reveals how intertwined this organization has been with the local community since its inception nearly 90 years ago. Photographs, cards, newspaper articles and other mementos found in the slightly tattered and worn book with a dark green leather cover reflect what it once was.

Big game weekend

When the new Doc Harris Stadium is officially unveiled to the community on Friday, it will be almost exactly 40 years to the day since an equally important event occurred in local history -- in that very same spot. It was on Sept. 18, 1970, that the stadium was officially named the "Dr. Arthur K. Harris Stadium," to honor the local doctor's significant contributions to high school athletics, and his incredible capacity to give back to the community he loved very much.

Uncover the treasures

Step into the Inter-Faith Treasure House in Washougal, and you'll see people hard at work. They're sorting clothes, putting food on the shelves, arranging donations, answering phone calls, and helping thrift store customers. Every person has a job to do, and they do it well, efficiently and with enthusiasm. And, amazingly enough, the people staffing the facility are doing all of this for absolutely no monetary compesation. They do it because they want to help the community, and filling their time doing worthy, meaningful work has its own rewards as well.

The community’s helping hand

The Inter-Faith Treasure House began as a true grass roots effort that sprouted and grew over four decades to become an organization that today impacts the lives of thousands of people each year. The Treasure House first opened its doors in 1970, when members of a group of local churches got together to form the organization as it recognized the need in the community. That first year, a total of $1,227 in outreach was distributed to the community.

Screening saves lives

It's something no woman wants to think is even possible. The prospect of getting breast cancer is terrifying, but unfortunately very real. This year, 207,090 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States. Of those, 39,840 will die.

Don Barron (right), owner of Lacamas Canoe & Kayak, helps lead an excursion on Lacamas Lake on Monday. Barron opened the rental, class and excursion facility at Heritage Park in Camas in June 2009. He also owns RiverTrails in Troutdale, Ore.

‘A great paddle’

When viewed from its shoreline, Lacamas Lake is a beautiful site. But it is only while sitting in the snug confines of a kayak as it glides swiftly across the water that one can truly see this local treasure come to life. For beginners and those who aren't lucky enough to own their own watercraft, one of the best ways to experience this is by renting from Lacamas Canoe & Kayak. Owned by Vancouver resident Don Barron, since last summer the facility at Heritage Park has offered hourly and daily rentals of about two dozen recreational kayaks and canoes.

Firefighters mop up at Hilltop Fire north of Camas

After dealing with gusty, erratic winds and high humidity for most of last week, fire crews battling the Hilltop Fire north of Camas welcomed more cooperative weather over the weekend. "Cooler temperatures and higher humidity's throughout the night have greatly helped our mop up efforts," said Kent Stanford, operations chief. "Long range weather forecasts seem to be going our way." Helicopter flights equipped with an infared camera flew over the fire on Wednesday night and found that there were still multiple hot spots around the west interior of the burn. Fire crews worked on those spots using burnout techniques on Thursday.

Camas explores road maintenance options

In an effort to create a stable source of funding to help support street maintenance, the Camas City Council is currently looking at a few different options. The city has about 105 miles of paved roadways, ranging from major arterials to side streets. For about the past three years road maintenance funding, approximately $300,000 in 2010, has been taken from the city's Real Estate Excise Taxes. In previous years, the city has also contributed some of its general fund dollars to various road projects, and obtained grant funding.
