Camas City Council selects newest member

A 17-year Camas resident is the newest member of the City Council. Following the public interview process of six candidates and closed executive session council discussion, Tim Hazen was the eventual winner in a close vote last night.

Frontier Communications employees will soon begin repair work on telephone line damage that has resulted in 700 to 900 residences in the Washougal area losing phone service.

Camas couple found dead in apparent suicide

The bodies of a 53-year-old male and 44-year-old female, a married couple, were discovered inside their residence at the 1500 block of Northwest 10th Avenue at approximately 10:51 p.m.

Parents lobby to get new domestic violence law passed after daughter’s death

"Love you Mama." Those were the words Kerry Crane heard from her daughter Erin as the 25-year-old left her parents' Washougal home and headed to a job interview on Nov. 12, 2007. Later that evening, police found Erin Dawn Wilson dead at a house northeast of Vancouver. The young woman with the captivating smile had been strangled with her favorite scarf, her body was wrapped in a blanket stained with blood. The next day arrested and charged with first-degree murder was Wilson's husband, Larry F. Van Schaick. He eventually pleaded guilty and is now serving a 14 year sentence. "She was just getting her life back together," Crane said.

Advanced Placement world history teacher Sam Greene engages students in a lively discussion on Friday. Camas High School's AP program has grown significantly in recent years.  In 2010, 298 students took a total of 512 AP tests. Four-hundred-twelve had a score of 3 or better. That is in comparison to 2003, when only 60 students took the AP tests with 64.6 percent scoring a 3 or better.

Advanced Placement: More than just a test

"New perspectives on a diverse and complicated world." For veteran Camas High School teacher Hannelore Tweed, these are the opportunities she is passionate about providing to her students. Her ability to do this was expanded this year as Tweed was offered the chance to become the instructor of a new Advanced Placement class called "human geography."

Sean Emberlin, 7, and his grandfather Bill Emberlin browse the selection at the Prune Hill Elementary School Scholastic book fair on Monday morning. The event is being held this week in conjunction with Superhero Costume Day and Grandparent Breakfast. In an effort to get everyone into the spirit of the event, masks and capes were available for students at the library. Other events this week will include story times with special guest readers and a live reptile show.

Super duper readers

It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's a Prune Hill Elementary School student dressed in a cape and mask dashing into the book fair on Monday. Students took full advantage of what school Librarian Meghan Johnson describes as an "over the top," idea to combine Superhero Dress Up Day with the school's annual Scholastic book fair. To top it off, this is also the week that grandparents are invited to eat breakfast with students.

One common goal

Hometown spirit was on display in nearly every corner of Camas and Washougal this week as local seasonal events, outreach efforts to help those in need and tree lighting events took place in the local area. These holiday activities truly brought our communities together.

Camas council approves ‘austere’ 2011 budget

The Camas City Council voted unanimously last night to pass its $49.21 million 2011 budget. The budget reflects cuts that had to be made as a result of a $1.6 million shortfall, which was created in the wake of an estimated 7.6 percent reduction in the city's assessed value for 2011. A 13 percent ($300,000) increase in the cost of personnel medical benefits also had a significant impact. Reserve funding has been allocated to cover $800,000 of the gap, and another $650,000 in cuts were trimmed from the budget -- with reductions impacting all departments.

Six express interest in Camas council seat

Six candidates are vying for the Ward 1 position on the Camas City Council. On Monday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m., Michael Boyer, Mel Cardon, Cliff Duncan, Tim Hazen, Kris Henriksen and Dan Stephen will be interviewed for the position that is currently held by Helen Gerde. Applications for the seat were accepted through Nov. 30.
