City accepts applications for Ward 3 seat

Applications are currently being accepted to fill the Camas City Council Ward 3 seat. The position has been vacant since Monday, June 27, when Scott Higgins resigned following his appointment to serve as Camas mayor. Former Mayor Paul Dennis resigned as of May 31 to accept the position of director of the Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association. Applications for the Ward 3, Position 2 seat, available at www.ci.camas.wa.us, must be hand-delivered to Camas City Hall by Friday, July 15. Submissions made by U.S. mail, e-mail or fax will not be accepted.

Higgins appointed to fulfill term as Camas mayor

With a unanimous vote by the Camas City Council, Scott Higgins is now officially the mayor of Camas. The former Ward 3 councilman and mayor pro-tem was appointed to the position following a structured interview and selection process last night at City Hall. The other candidate was Kim Seaton Thies.

Fireworks go on sale today

Local residents can buy fireworks for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday beginning today, but depending on where they live might have to wait a bit to set them off. Fireworks can be legally discharged in Camas city limits today, from noon to 11 p.m.; Wednesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Monday, from 9 a.m. to midnight, and July 5, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Extra DUI patrols will save lives

Sunday afternoon, traffic slowed on Highway 14 as it approached a State Patrol vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road with emergency lights flashing. The trooper had made a traffic stop and was in the process of administering a field sobriety test to a woman suspected of driving under the influence.

Fire department consolidation begins July 1

With votes of approval by the Camas and Washougal City Councils last night, a functional consolidation effort between the two cities' fire departments will begin July 1. Camas unanimously approved the inter-local agreement for the trial effort. Washougal's council support was 5 to 2, with Michael Delavar and Dave Shoemaker voting against.
