Camas approves resolution focusing on coal trains

The Camas City Council recently approved a resolution that outlines a series of concerns about the potential impacts of coal trains on the city and its residents. The resolution, approved by six of the seven members of City Council, states that an increase in the number of coal trains passing through the area could increase train noise, cause traffic congestion that could delay emergency vehicles, and negatively impact public health.

In its heyday during the late 1940s and 1950s, the Wagon Wheel Park skating rink and dance hall was the "rockin' place to be" on Saturday nights in Camas.While the venue located on Northeast Third Avenue on the banks of the Washougal River was a skating rink on the weekdays, on Friday nights it began its transformation.

Beginning Friday, traffic on Highway 14 in Camas-Washougal will be shifted to a new southern frontage road that runs parallel to the highway. This route will take drivers through two roundabouts at Union (above) and Second streets for the next 10 months.

SR-14 traffic shifts to frontage road on Friday

Drivers on state Route 14 in Camas and Washougal will see some major changes in their trips next week when crews start the second half of a $49 million construction project that when complete will improve safety and traffic flow between Vancouver, east Clark County and the Columbia River Gorge. At 8 p.m. on Friday, all traffic on state Route 14 will shift to a new southern frontage road that runs parallel to the highway. Drivers will travel 25 mph through two roundabouts at Union and Second streets for nearly 10 months.

Potential local impacts of coal trains need to be taken seriously

In Camas and Washougal, the sounds of trains passing through our communities have become almost commonplace. Each day we see and hear them go by, often as we wait for the train cars to clear local BNSF railroad crossings. We may not like them much, but we live with them because they are just one aspect of these two communities that have so many other great qualities.

On Dec. 31, 2011, Belle Mathieu's life changed forever when she suffered a severe brain stem stroke as she was getting ready to go for a walk with a friend.
