Pianist will perform concert on Sunday in Washougal

A recent Marylhurst University graduate will perform a piano concert in Washougal on Sunday. Ian Guthrie, the pianist at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Washougal for the past two years, will put on a short piano concert at the church, located at G Street and Washougal River Road, at 12:45 p.m.

Road work will begin in Camas next week

Beginning Monday, July 28, crews will begin asphalt repair work at several locations around Camas. Northwest Lake Road from Northwest Everett Street to Northwest Sierra will undergo base repairs, a full width grind of the existing surface, and will then be capped with an asphalt lift.

Cal Hittle, 67, will retire as the City of Camas chief sanitation worker at the end of the month. During his 30-year career with the city, he has spearheaded innovation within the department and placed a focus on providing a high level of customer service. City Councilman Don Chaney recently commented that Hittle has been an "ambassador" for Camas. "Over the years of my time on Council, I can't remember an employee that I've heard more positive comments about [regarding] their level and quality of service, and the smile he brings to the job every day. We've benefitted by having him as an employee."

The end of the road

Cal Hittle hauled his first garbage can when he was just 5 years old. To make ends meet, Hittle's father had to work a variety of jobs -- wildcatter in the oil fields, ranch hand and logger, to name a few. Wherever there was work, that is where the family went. All told, they lived in seven different states, and the children attended 13 different schools.

Camas approves $10.5 million bond ordinance

The Camas City Council on July 21 approved an ordinance that could provide up to $10.5 million in limited tax general obligation bonds to fund several different projects.
