Cape Horn-Skye Elementary has been named a Washington State School of Distinction for its performance on state tests. Expecting the best

Ask Mary Lou Woody what makes Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School a success, and the answer is simple. "The staff," she said. "I always tell them that I know just how lucky I am. They have high expectations, both for themselves and each other."

It's that time of year again. November typically kicks off a flurry of holidays bazaars, where those looking for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts are sure to find them. During the next month, several bazaars are coming to churches, schools and civic centers. Eager shoppers will have the chance to support the local economy, buy handcrafted items and avoid big box stores.

Washougal High School students will bring Broadway to the Washburn Performing Arts Center this weekend. The actors are performing, "Guys and Dolls," a Broadway musical based on the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, with music by Frank Loesser.

Grass Valley Elementary School in Camas will be the location of a "musical homecoming," for those who have been members of the vocal jazz group in the past and present. The fall concert, set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, will honor vocal jazz members from the past 25 years who have paved the way for Grass Valley Vocal Jazz, according to director Natalie Wilson.

A ‘big reunion’ ride

People have been known to do some unusual things in preparation for a high school reunion. Crazy diets, plastic surgery, and showing up in new sports cars are just a few. But David Blair, 47, took it a step further. Or more like several miles. As in, about 2,581 of them. Blair, a health and fitness teacher at Skyridge Middle School, rode from Everett, Wash., to Washington, D.C. in a "big reunion ride," to celebrate his 30th high school reunion. "I'd never been to one and thought it would be a fun way to show up," he said. "Oddly enough, the reunion organizers ended up having it in October so I missed it, But I still did the ride."

A career Camas firefighter is challenging incumbent John Clancy for East County Fire & Rescue Commission Position 4. "I've been with the fire service for 27 years and want to continue doing that," said Brooks Cooper. "With my experience as a firefighter, I'll make a great commissioner." Clancy, who has been on the commission seven years, enjoys his job and wants to continue. "I like doing what I am doing and feel like I'm contributing to the community."
