Local family enjoys entering canine competitions

As far back as Corie Hebert can remember, she and her mom, Kim, have attended the Rose City Classic dog show in Portland. After watching the handling portion, she decided to try it out. "I just thought it would be fun," she said.

Local Humane Society rescues dogs and cats who would otherwise be euthanized

For many of the cats and dogs who come to the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, some are just hours away from being euthanized."It's our mission to end unnecessary euthanization of animals and to place them in forever homes," interim president Rochelle Ramos said. "We also want to be a resource to people who have to surrender animals or need help caring for them."

Voices of art

Visitors to the Camas High School art show last week may have been surprised to see something considered a faux pas at most venues: People with cell phones pressed to their ears.However, it wasn't a case of bad manners, but instead technology that allowed users to have a virtual guided tour of the show.

Kurt Hill enjoys career as captain of the world’s biggest dredge

New York City is a long way from Washougal, but that's where Kurt Hill is turning his dreams into reality. As a kid attending Washougal schools, Hill always wanted to work with his hands when he got older. However, he never dreamed he'd be using those to command the biggest dredge in the world. "I didn't even know this kind of stuff existed before," he said.

New board member Karen Rubino wants to become more involved

Electrician. Construction manager. Business co-owner. Mother. Karen Rubino has had several titles during her life and now she’s adding another: School board member. Rubino, a 14-year Washougal resident, is the newest member of the Washougal School Board. When asked why she ran for the board, Rubino said she wanted to make a difference in her community and the timing was right.

Mike Broderick recently retired after nearly 28 years of driving a bus for the Washougal School District. He said he'll miss the daily joking and conversation with his co-workers, as well as the children he drove to and from school.

Going the extra mile

Mike Broderick never intended to be a career school bus driver.But in the odd twists and turns that life sometimes takes, he became one. Last month, Broderick, 65, retired after 27 1/2; years with the Washougal School District, ferrying children to and from school in all kinds of weather. Back when Broderick began driving, the School District took the same attitude toward canceling school as the post office does for delivering mail: Neither wind, nor rain, nor sleet, nor snow would deter drivers from getting children safely to and from school via the shiny yellow buses.

Woodburn Elementary in Camas is expected to open in the fall of 2013. The 71,383 square foot building will accommodate 600 students.

Construction continues on Woodburn Elementary

The Camas School District will have three elementary schools completed within three years when Woodburn Elementary opens in 2013. Grass Valley and Helen Baller Elementary are the other two recent additions, both of which opened in the fall of 2010. A sixth elementary school is needed due to continued enrollment growth in the Camas School District, according to Superintendent Mike Nerland. "With a large increase in our student population, the district had an urgent need to provide additional housing for our students" he said.

LaCamas Swim & Sport's indoor pool area includes a three-lane lap pool, a recreation pool, and a hydrospa, according to the facility's website. Camas City councilors met Monday to discuss buying LaCamas Swim & Sport and converting the 41,000-square-foot building into a public recreation center, but differing opinions expressed at the meeting show the councilors are nowhere near making a decision.

It’s party planning time

Planning a child's birthday party can be a lot of fun. It can also be exhausting and time consuming. That's why several local businesses offer children's birthday packages, ranging from a fairy princess dance party to swimming and games. At Papa's Ice Cream in Washougal, owner Ivan Gering allows usage of a room which features a Wii and DVD player with a big screen, so partygoers can play games or kick back and watch a movie.

Sharing a love of reading

Cassidy Hines has always loved to read. So when Camas High School teacher-librarian Rosemary Knapp talked to her about having a school book club, Hines was all for it.
