Violas for a cause

Two Camas girls are teaming up to raise money for charity by playing their violas. Sophia Hansen and Rachel Greene played several duets at last week's Farmer's Market in downtown Camas, in an effort to raise money for the Humane Society. At the end of the day, the "dueling violas" as they call themselves, had received $113.89 for their cause. "I thought it was great," said Greene. "It felt great to use our talents and abilities to give back." DeForest, 11, began playing at the market when her friend, Sarah Wells, invited her. Three years later, deForest has graduated from the violin to the viola, but the primary motivation to raise money for different causes remains the same.

Local teens, business owners talk about finding and keeping employment

It's become increasingly difficult to find a job as a teen or young adult, especially if you lack experience. With unemployment in Clark County still high, many young people are competing with adults for jobs that are usually their bread-and-butter: Fast food and customer service positions. Employers can now afford to be more selective about who they hire, knowing that many of the applicants are seeking the job to support their families, not just for extra spending money.

Washougal eighth-graders travel to the East Coast for U.S. history trip

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness...charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."This Mark Twain quote is a favorite of Jemtegaard Middle School U.S. history teacher Scott Rainey. It is also his personal credo whenever he does what few of us could imagine doing: Taking a large group of eighth-graders to a staggering number of historically significant sites on the East Coast, all while ensuring they have as much fun as possible.

City, School District explore partnership

How do we best serve the public? The City of Camas Parks and Recreation Department and the Camas School District Community Education program are considering that question with the help of an advisory committee, which is exploring new partnership options for recreation services. "We have excellent partnerships in the school and the city that did not come about by accident," Mayor Scott Higgins said at a recent School Board meeting. "We are constantly looking for ways to make it even better. I felt there were some things parks and recreation were doing that community ed was also doing. Why not combine services?"
