Cori Lee's business card contains a definition of serendipity -- "the art of making happy discoveries." She recently opened a new business in Washougal, The Serendipity Shop, which contains a wide array of goods.

Alla Fleischer prepared sandwiches with lemon chicken and roasted red peppers, with assistance from volunteer Lynne Foster, Friday at the Camas Community Center. Fleischer, kitchen coordinator for The Meals on Wheels People Camas-Washougal, will retire at the end of this week. Cake and ice cream will be served in her honor Thursday, at the Washougal Community Center.

Diligently serving senior citizens

The kitchen coordinator for The Meals on Wheels People Camas-Washougal plans to continue being creative, singing, dancing and traveling, while making new friends after retirement. Alla Fleischer, 66, will retire after preparing lunch Friday, at the Camas Community Center.

Marijuana moratorium extended in Washougal

The Washougal City Council has extended a marijuana moratorium by three months, after listening to comments during a public hearing. The unanimous decision, regarding the retail sale, processing and growing of recreational marijuana within the city limits, occurred during the May 27 meeting. A previous ordinance was set to expire yesterday.

Several local fire officials recently coordinated the donation and installation of a ramp for Bob Dawson (second from right), who was diagnosed with ALS in 2013. Recently appearing with him were Jordan Boldt, Jake Grindy, Dawson's wife Charlie, and Joe Scheer. Charlie has served as a Washougal volunteer firefighter for more than 23 years. "They shocked us," Charlie said, regarding the addition of a ramp. "It was really nice."

Firefighters initiate project for local man with ALS

A local woman who has spent her life helping people recently benefitted from the generosity of others. Charlie Dawson, of Washougal, is a volunteer battalion chief and a first responder with the Camas-Washougal Fire Department. Her husband, Bob, was officially diagnosed with ALS -- also known as 'Lou Gehrig's Disease' -- by a neurologist in October 2013.

Patty and Gordon French, accompanied by their schnauzer Lulu, have been named the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce "Business Persons of the Year." The Frenches have owned LJC Feed for 19 years. "I think it's one of the biggest compliments that we could receive," Patty said, regarding the chamber award. "It means a lot to us."

Local couple earns honors for mentoring, volunteering

Gordon French describes owning LJC Feed as "a labor of love." He and his wife Patty purchased the store in Camas 19 years ago, and they have influenced and educated children, teens and adults ever since. The Frenches have been named the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce 2014 "Business Persons of the Year." "It was awesome," Patty said. "It feels very rewarding."

Nikayla Banks, vice president of the Washougal High School Interact Club, and member Nick Costa-Stange, planted marigolds and pansies Friday afternoon at the Washougal Memorial Cemetery. Several Interact members were involved in the volunteer planting effort, to prepare the site for Memorial Day weekend.

Local groups plan Memorial Day commemorations

Memorial Day weekend in Camas and Washougal will feature several remembrances and tributes. Originally called Decoration Day, it is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

Mill City Brew Werks receives Main Street award

A downtown Camas business has received statewide recognition for improving the economic condition of the area. Mill City Brew Werks, owned by Mark Zech and Walt LeDoux, is located at 339 N.E. Cedar St. The restaurant, pub and brewery received an Excellence on Main award from the Washington State Main Street Program.

Washougal eyes marijuana moratorium or ban

Washougal residents will have an opportunity to comment on a potential extension of a moratorium and/or a ban regarding the retail sale, processing and growing of recreational marijuana within the city limits. A public hearing will be held during the next regular City Council meeting Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m., at City Hall, 1701 "C" St. The council approved an emergency ordinance on Dec. 2, 2013, regarding the establishment of retail businesses that sell marijuana. It establishes a six-month moratorium prohibiting all uses allowed under state Initiative 502. That ordinance is set to expire June 2.

Retail marijuana sites are selected by lottery

A man who is hoping to open a retail marijuana location in Camas did not have much to say Monday, regarding his top placement among applicants involved in a lottery. Marc Elkins, with Elkgard Enterprises of 3199 N.E. Lechner St., declined to comment about the Washington State Liquor Control Board lottery results due to Camas' continued moratorium. On April 7, the Camas City Council voted to extend a zoning moratorium relating to the establishment of marijuana production, processing and retail sales facilities. A public hearing regarding the growing, harvesting and processing of marijuana in Camas will be held Monday, May 19, at 7 p.m., at City Hall.

Oaks area could be added to refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to include approximately 88 acres of rare Oregon white oak woodland and savanna forest habitats within the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
