Port of C-W hosts Independence Day festivities

Events for all ages will be provided at Marina Park Friday. Children, ages 3 to 11, are invited to dress up and decorate their bikes for a patriotic-themed parade at 4 p.m., around the park, located by the Port of Camas-Washougal marina, 24 S. "A" St., Washougal.

Washougal Planning Commission to discuss recreational marijuana issues

The Washougal Planning Commission will soon address the issues of potentially banning the retail sale, growing and processing of recreational marijuana within the city limits -- with an expiration date. The city is working on an amendment to its development regulations. The amendment would state "no use that is illegal under local, state or federal law shall be allowed in any zone within the city."

Applications are still being accepted for Washougal city council seat

The successor to Washougal City Councilwoman Caryn Plinski will be chosen in July. A special City Council meeting had been scheduled for Monday, at 7 p.m., in the council chambers at City Hall, 1701 "C" St., to hold interviews of applicants and potentially appoint a new member, and the deadline to submit applications was going to 5 p.m., Wednesday.

Financial solutions are proposed in Washougal

The Washougal Finance Director has presented information about options that could offset a projected deficit of $322,000 in 2015. During the City Council workshop Monday, Jennifer Forsberg said the renewal of a levy lid lift would bring in $144,000, while a $10 vehicle tab fee would generate $107,000.

Lacamas, iQ credit union consolidation is official July 1

Members of Lacamas Community Credit Union recently received letters in the mail, welcoming them to the iQ Credit Union 'family.' During a special meeting of the LCCU membership on June 12, members voted 79 percent in favor of approving consolidation plans between Lacamas and iQ.

Dogs and their owners enjoy the open spaces of the Donald and Angeline Stevenson Off Leash Area, at 32nd and Addy streets in Washougal. The park includes a separate area for smaller dogs.

Constant companions

There are benefits for dogs and their owners to spend time running or walking. Justin Anderson, of Washougal, said his 4-month-old goldendoodle, Kirby behaves better with a walk.

Healthy at work

Georgia-Pacific is among the area's companies that promote health and safety -- in the workplace and beyond. The mill in downtown Camas provides an on site nurse and physical therapist, for employees. Fresh fruit can be found in the nurse's office, and sometimes in the clock room.

Residents of Columbia Ridge Senior Living, in Washougal, enjoy a game of beanbag baseball. Other activities include exercise classes, walking clubs, ice cream socials, Bible studies, arts and crafts, gardening and music. There are trivia games, reading groups and outings to the beach, local restaurants, museums, special events and concerts. "Hopefully we are giving our residents the chance to enjoy each day to its fullest potential," said Columbia Ridge Activity Director Michelle Kendoll.

Improving the latter years of life

Maggie Lou Heltzel enjoys challenges, most any games and mingling with people. She is among the participants in beanbag baseball at Columbia Ridge Senior Living, in Washougal. Heltzel, 86, also enjoys playing bingo and exercise "sometimes."

Camas may buy LaCamas Swim & Sport

After several years of committees looking at options for constructing a community center in Camas, a potential site is available that would cost less and be available sooner. City leaders are looking into the possibility of purchasing LaCamas Swim & Sport.

There are 15 bays in the new Westlie Ford service department in Washougal, with plans to add seven more. The former shop in downtown Camas had nine stalls. In addition to the parts and service departments, the business administrative offices have moved to the car dealership's location near state Route 14. The transition has gone well so far, according to Ryan Dickerson, one of the company's owners. "It's nice having everyone together," he said.

Westlie Ford sets up shop in Washougal

A local company, with a long history in the community, is transitioning from its historic roots to expansions, renovations and relocations of several departments. The Westlie Ford parts and service departments, as well as business administrative offices, have been moved from 314 N.E. Birch St., in downtown Camas, to the dealership's sales location at 40 S. Marina Way, in Washougal.
