St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church is located at 324 N.E. Oak St., in the Evergreen Terrace neighborhood of Camas. Church leaders are looking into the possibility of opening a severe weather shelter in the church's parish hall. Some residents of the neighborhood are concerned a temporary shelter will attract homeless people from other areas.

St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church leaders are exploring the possibility of opening their Camas parish hall as an emergency severe-weather shelter this winter.

Construction on the future Grains of Wrath brewery and restaurant in downtown Camas — at the site of the former Lemon-Aide Automotive building off Northeast Fifth Avenue and Birch Street — is in full swing and on track for a projected springtime opening.

Phase one of a bicycle skills course makes its way around the perimeter of Hamllik Park, in Washougal. Phase two of the project has been put on hold, because a $34,560 contract with Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance did not consider prevailing wage and permitting requirements.

Children who were looking forward to trying new moves with their bicycles on phase two of the Washougal bicycle skills course will have to wait, now that city officials have determined prevailing wage and state and local permitting requirements were not fully considered in a contract.

Help needed to open severe weather shelter

As the city of Washougal prepares to open a severe weather shelter for the homeless — when there is a forecast of 30 degrees or colder — there will need to be more volunteers available.

Amanda Green, of Camas, recently visited the Salvation Army’s “Blessing Room” to look for clothing. “This is good for homeless and ones who can’t afford (new clothes),” Green said.

Local groups help homeless weather winter

The city of Washougal is considering opening a severe weather shelter for the homeless, but there are several organizations and churches in the area already offering resources such as food and clothing for people struggling to find housing and afford basic necessities.
