Washougal Council will vote on EMS funding option

The Washougal City Council is expected to vote next week on an option to have the Washougal Fire Department operate under a "functional operational consolidation" with the Camas Fire Department on a trial basis. According to information provided during the Washougal council workshop last night, city staff members are recommending "option 4" for a short term solution while additional analysis occurs for a long term fix.

Washougal council approves public works bonds

Many water, sewer and storm water projects in Washougal are expected to be paid for with bonds. City council members approved the issuance of water and sewer revenue bonds in the amount of $16.1 million, during their April 18 meeting. The vote was 6 to 1, with Michael Delavar voting against it.

Washougal musician plays mid-life melodies

A Washougal resident is among a group of men who perform a variety of music from the 1950s to current hits. Dave Capron is a member of the River City Band, which has entertained people at clubs, wedding receptions, concerts, private parties and corporate events. Capron, 62, predominantly plays clarinet, as well as keyboards, percussion, saxophone, flute and harmonica. His musical career began in junior high and high school as a school band member.

Brian Radford, co-owner of Classic Muffler & Brakes, adjusts the carburetor of a 1939 Chevrolet. The shop recently opened in downtown Camas, next to Sears Hometown store. Classic Muffler, also owned by Radford's wife Pamela and his parents Robert and Donna, specializes in hitches, custom exhaust, brakes and general auto repair. Brian and Pamela also own Classic Automotive & Collision Center, in Washougal, which offers tune-ups and state-certified emissions repairs.

"He's been around it ever since," Robert said. "I wish all fathers and sons got along as well as we do." Today, they work together at Classic Muffler & Brakes, a shop that recently opened in downtown Camas. It is owned by Brian and his wife Pamela, as well as Robert and his wife Donna.

Individuals who attended the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce grand opening and ribbon cutting event at Camas SNAP Fitness 24/7 had opportunities to try out the Matrix and Cybex equipment, as well as meet the owners Doug and Jodi Vaughan (not pictured). The April 7 event also included complimentary wine and cheese, raffle prizes and giveaways. SNAP Fitness is located in Lacamas Center.

SNAP Fitness facility opens in Lacamas Center

A local couple has opened their third SNAP Fitness location - a 24-hour center in Camas. Doug and Jodi Vaughan also own SNAP facilities in Woodland and Battle Ground, as well as Caffe Piccolo, in downtown Camas. The SNAP Fitness facilities offer cardio and strength-training equipment, group exercise classes, tanning, and private and small group personal training. Month-to-month memberships are available.

Washougal council appoints ethics review committee

After much discussion regarding the composition of a committee to review the City of Washougal's ethics policy, three City Council members were appointed last night by their fellow councilors. The new ad-hoc committee consists of Molly Coston, Michael Delavar and Jennifer McDaniel. Before the committee was named, Paul Greenlee recommended that representatives from Battle Ground and Vancouver provide information and insights since they have relatively new ethics policies.

Beth Campagna, a teacher at Rushing Water Yoga, in downtown Camas, is participating in a "yogathon" for the first time this year. The fund raiser for the "Living Yoga" program will generate financial support to teach yoga in prisons, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and transitional facilities.

Transforming lives through yoga

The owner of Rushing Water Yoga, of Camas, and several of the studio's other teachers are among the participants in this year's "Yogathon," to raise money for the "Living Yoga" program. The non-profit outreach program teaches yoga as a tool for personal change in prisons, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and transitional facilities. Classes are held at more than 15 sites, including Columbia River Correctional Institution, DePaul Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers for adults and teens, the Oregon State Penitentiary and Raphael House of Portland. The participants from Rushing Water are among the 15 teams taking part in this year's fund raiser.

C-TRAN board approves service preservation measure

Area voters will decide in November whether they want C-TRAN to maintain its current level of service, while votes regarding the funding of light rail in Vancouver are expected to be submitted next year. The measure, which will ask for an additional two cents tax on every $10 purchase, would pay for phase one of the 20-year Transit Development Plan. That would include improved service frequency on routes serving Vancouver, Camas, Washougal and Battle Ground.

Washougal council continues ethics discussions

One of the Washougal City councilors who missed the discussion last week regarding potential appointments to an ethics committee made his feelings known during last night's workshop. Dave Shoemaker said the council does not need an ethics committee.

Mike Wolfe will teach beginning and advanced pickleball classes, starting April 20, in the Jemtegaard Middle School gym.

Local couple promotes pickleball

A sport that combines the skills of pingpong, badminton, tennis and racquetball is gaining momentum throughout Clark County, and a local couple is doing their part to promote it within the Camas-Washougal area. Mike and Tawn Wolfe, both 65, have played pickleball for two years. As voluntary co-ambassadors, they play in tournaments together and write a monthly newsletter about the sport.
