Mitch Hammontree, owner of Quiznos, at The Crossing, in Washougal, enjoys talking with crews from Tapani Underground, Inc. Despite support from many of the Tapani employees, Hammontree said his business has experienced a 50 percent decline in sales since the state Route 14 improvements project started earlier this year.

Constructing cooperation

Kurt Cichosz, a foreman with Tapani Underground Inc., has eaten at Quiznos, in Washougal, five days a week, for four months. As one of the road construction crew members working on the state Route 14 improvements project, Cichosz estimates he has spent more than $1,000 on a variety of sandwiches, sodas, chips and cookies at the local Quiznos.

Twilight Pizza accepts donations for Children’s Center

A small business in downtown Camas is doing what it can to help clients of the Children's Center. Twilight Pizza Bistro is accepting donations of personal care items such as shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, mouthwash, toothbrushes, hairbrushes and combs, toilet paper and paper towels, soap and feminine hygiene products through Monday.

Jonathon Huckvale, a 2003 Camas High School graduate, recently earned a bachelor's degree in marketing communications from Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. In addition to being in the top 10 percent of his college class, he was accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society. Huckvale and his wife Nancy have returned to live in Camas. He wants to encourage local youth to persevere through challenges. Huckvale's life experiences have included overcoming poor grades and an SUV accident in high school.

Excellence through adversity

A Camas man who experienced several challenges while in high school would like local students to know there is hope for them to succeed in life. Jonathon Huckvale, a 2003 Camas High School graduate, recently earned a bachelor's degree in marketing communications from Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. In addition to being in the top 10 percent of his class, he was accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society. Huckvale was recruited and hired by Sentry Insurance, where he is involved in commercial business insurance, in the Portland and Vancouver areas. He recently took the Graduate Management Admission Test, and he plans to pursue a master's in business administration. Huckvale has already been accepted to the University of Southern California and Marylhurst University. He has not yet made a decision, as he awaits replies from other schools.

Candidates’ contributors include CEO, builders and city councilor

While Connie Jo Freeman is questioning some of the donations that have been made to her opponent Molly Coston's campaign, Freeman is choosing to only provide information about donations of $100 and more. Freeman is challenging the incumbent Coston for the Washougal City Council Position No. 7.

Eric Hargrave, owner of Limitless Snow-Wake-Surf, in Washougal, sells a variety of Ronix wake boards, Radar waterskis and apparel, as well as snow boards, bindings and boots. A product and gear showcase is planned for Friday, Oct. 21, and food and beverages will be available Saturday, Oct. 22, during the grand opening festivities.

Pushing the limits

A man who went skydiving for his senior project at Washougal High School has opened a shop that appeals to fellow adventurers in his hometown. Eric Hargrave, a 2003 WHS graduate, wrote his senior paper about the psychology of doing extreme sports. In addition to skydiving, he went kite boarding and snowboarding. The project included videotaped evidence of Hargrave's accomplishments. Hargrave owns Limitless Snow-Wake-Surf -- a two-year-old former home-based business -- that sells a variety of Ronix wake boards, Radar waterskis and apparel. A shipment of snow boards, bindings, boots and helmets, along with gloves, hats, socks, hoodies and T-shirts, is expected to arrive this week.

Hambleton insurance issues to be researched

A contract recently signed by the Port of Camas-Washougal Commission is expected to identify insurance policies related to the Hambleton Lumber Company site. The agreement with Chemlik Sitkin & Davis, of Bellingham, is expected to identify pre-1986 commercial general liability policies that may provide insurance coverage to the port for environmental work on the site at 335 "A" St., in Washougal. The law firm's services will also include getting coverage decisions from carriers and, if needed, negotiating agreements with carriers.

McDaniel, Anderson vie for Washougal Council seat

The choices for the Washougal City Council Position No. 5 seat feature an incumbent who is also serving as mayor pro tem and a woman who has lived most of her life in Washougal. Incumbent Jennifer McDaniel, 45, has lived in Washougal for six years, while challenger Niki Anderson, 36, grew up in Washougal.

Matt Jackim, a 2011 Camas High School graduate, holds "Belize," a common boa constrictor, at the Oregon Zoo. "She is a very strong snake," Jackim said. "She is amazing -- the pattern of her scales. She is a personal favorite of mine." Jackim recently completed his fifth summer as a "ZooTeens" volunteer. His responsibilities included providing presentations to the public.

Appreciating animals

A recent Camas High School graduate has completed his fifth summer as a "Zoo Teen" at the Oregon Zoo. Matt Jackim's most recent responsibilities included taking care of ferrets and snakes in the "education animal house." Younger "Zoo Teens" observed him performing tasks such as making meals for animals. "It's a really cool experience to teach other people during their first years [as volunteers]," Jackim said. He said he has learned how to conduct himself in a professional manner in front of the public while providing presentations about various zoo residents.

Killian Pacific interested in Hambleton site

The same company that produced The Crossing and Evergreen Marketplace, in Washougal, as well as the Grand Central and Riverstone Marketplace developments, in Vancouver, has an interest in purchasing the former Hambleton Lumber Company site. Adam Tyler, a design and development manager with Killian Pacific, confirmed this morning that the commercial real-estate development and investment company located in Vancouver and Portland is interested in buying the former lumberyard located at 335 "A" St., Washougal, but said "several challenges must be solved first." Tyler said the challenges will be outlined during the port commission meeting today, at 5 p.m., in the port office meeting room, 24 S. "A" St., Washougal. The site, owned by Hambleton Brothers Lumber Company, is approximately 25 acres.

Port candidates offer diverse views on local issues

Neil Cahoon said he is "not thrilled" with the decision making process going on at the Port of Camas-Washougal, and he hopes to be involved in future decisions as a port commissioner. Cahoon will face incumbent Bill Ward, for the Position No. 2 seat, in the Nov. 8 General Election.
