Sapphire crystals pilot project is underway

A company located in the Port of Camas-Washougal Industrial Park is embarking on a pilot project to grow sapphire crystals for multiple uses. Sapphire Materials Company, LLC, is located in the Columbia Manufacturing & Technology Center, along with Silicon Chemical Corporation, SCC Solar Energy Group and Quantum Clean Corporation, at the former Saint-Gobain Crystals property, in Washougal.

EMS issues attract interest at Washougal retreat

The Camas and Washougal City councils will soon discuss the possibility of extending the trial merger of the cities' fire departments for up to two years. Those discussions are expected to occur in February, according to Washougal Fire Department Chief Ron Schumacher. He and Camas Fire Department Chief Nick Swinhart spoke Saturday during the Washougal City Council's annual planning session.

Film about human trafficking to be shown Monday

A one-hour documentary about human trafficking in Portland will be shown in downtown Camas. "Pornland," by Dan Rather Reports and HDNet, is scheduled to be shown Monday, at 6 p.m., at the Liberty Theatre, 315 N.E. Fourth Ave.

CHS wrestlers compete at Pacific Coast Championships

After already traveling to tournaments in Yakima and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho this season, Camas High School boys wrestling coach Glenn Hartman said it is nice to compete closer to home every once in a while. Fourteen Papermakers participated in the Pacific Coast Championships Thursday, at Hudson's Bay. The tournament, which involved 35 teams from throughout Washington and Oregon, continued Friday and was co-sponsored by Evergreen High School. Team finishes included Union in first place, followed by Kelso. Evergreen placed sixth as a team. Camas finished in 26th place, ahead of Heritage and Columbia River. "It was a pretty tough tournament," Hartman said.

The home of Henry and Carol Waring, located behind Hathaway Elementary School, in Washougal, is brightly lit for the holidays. The couple, along with their grandson Taber, enjoy providing special yuletide memories for area residents. "It's just being part of the community and doing something nice -- making somebody's day brighter," Carol said. Another grandson, Cameron, sometime suits up, in order to give Henry a break. The family plans to be available for free photos next to their sleigh at 723 24th St., (on the corner of 24th and G streets) through Saturday, Christmas Eve, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Making spirits bright

Henry and Carol Waring are keeping the Christmas magic alive for many local residents, as he dons a red Santa suit and she wears a red Mrs. Claus robe with white trim, outside their home in Washougal.

Camas Antiques is among the top 80 favorite antique malls in the country, as decided by readers of "Flea Market Style" magazine. "I'm just glad for any recognition that brings new people to Camas," said store owner JoAnn Taylor (not pictured). More than 50 dealers offer a variety of vintage and antique furniture, clothing, jewelry and glassware on two floors in the 10,000-square-foot store located in downtown Camas.
