CSD hosts student film festival

The Camas School District is hosting its student film festival at the Liberty Theatre at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“The Impact of Giving Back,” will feature several short student films. It is free and open to the public.

The Liberty Theatre is located at 315 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas.

Spring book fair coming soon

Hathaway Elementary School is hosting a spring scholastic book fair, “Feelin’ Groovy: Peace, Love & Books!”

It is open to the public from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 30 and 31.

Hathaway will also host a “Blast from the Past” Family Night on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Recent retirees will attend and reminisce with students and families.

Hathaway Elementary is located at 630 24th St. Washougal.

Cape Horn-Skye names Super Citizens

Cape Horn-Skye has named its Super Citizens for the month of January.

They are:

Kindergarten: Kian Doan, Gus Fowler, Maddi Halverson, Soren Carmichael, Colton Sink, Devyn Aubrey, Emma Engel.

First grade: Michael Noah, Donevin Krieger and Bella Jessett, kindergarten/first-grade; Evan Honl, Joel Miller, Eddie Westerdahl, David Paripa, Luke Fischer, Keira Garcia and Charlie Hutchins.

Second grade: Gabriel Ryan, Brock Kadinger, Connor Acheson, Indiana Lockard, Collin Tautfest, Adam Rivas, Allison Drake, Carson Burnard and Loic Swindler.

Third grade: Max Shiluk, Daniel Purcell, Hayden Mitchell-Seeds, Maya Hopkins, Perry Wastradowski, Jarod Barlow and Carmen Rish.

WSU Vancouver hosting spring Marquee Diversity Event

Washington State University Vancouver will host a spring Marquee Diversity Event from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on March 29 in Firstenburg Student Commons.

“Insatiable,” a contemporary exploration of the ancient practice of taiko Japanese drumming, will be performed by UNIT SOUZOU, a professional company from Portland.

The performers use drumming, choreography and singing to create a full-length theatrical work interpreting life’s eternal hungers and desires, reoccurring cycles and repetitions, and the impact of these universal experiences and emotions.

WSU Vancouver to recognize Minoru Yasui

WSU Vancouver will recognize Minoru Yasui, posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, from noon to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 in the Dengerink Administration Building, Room 110.

Father and son George and Darren Nakata of Portland will share stories about Yasui, and explore how lessons from his life can be applied to social justice work today.

President Barack Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Yasui for challenging the forced incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry during World War II and for his “lifelong commitment to civil rights and social justice.” He is the first Oregonian to be honored with a named day (Minoru Yasui Day is March 28) in perpetuity.

Hall of Fame nominations

Nomination forms for the 2016 Camas Athletic Hall of Fame Class are now available at the high school’s athletic office, or at www.camasboosters.org/hall-fame.

Candidates should have achieved exceptional athletic success in the Camas School District. Individuals are not eligible until 10 years after they graduated from high school. Coaches must be retired from the sport in which he or she is being nominated. Teams cannot be inducted until 10 years after their season of record has ended.

Scholar athletes are students who succeed on the field and in the classroom, served in positions of leadership or made noteworthy community service contributions while in school.

Hall of Honor candidates are community members who have rendered services that benefit athletic programs in the Camas School District.

The deadline for nominations is April 15.
