Creating one’s own decorations can add a unique touch to holiday home decor.

Recently, the Garden Club of Camas Washougal hosted its annual fall/holiday centerpiece making event.

The Camas Community Center meeting room was transformed into a garden of sorts, with flowers, plants and containers filling the tables.

Karen Bork has led the efforts for the past few years.

“Ladies, we have more flowers than the market and more containers than you’ll know what to do with,” she said.

Bork noted that her favorite aspect of this particular event, which is held during the club’s regular meeting, is being with the other members.

“They are a fun group,” she said. “There’s always something different to do.”

She joined the club seven years ago and enjoys the speakers and various events.

Bork also volunteers her flower and centerpiece arranging talents in Portland, and has decorated for weddings.

“I just happen to be able to put a few things in a vase and have it look decent,” she joked. “The ladies seem to enjoy it and after three years, they know they can do it.”

Member Sally Greenlee enjoys making the holiday themed centerpieces.

She joined the garden club 10 years ago and likes the excursions, trips to specialty nurseries and monthly meetings.

“When we get together, we just have fun,” she said. “We aren’t too formal. We do have some incredibly talented members. I like looking at everyone else’s (creations) and wishing I could do that.”

President Zee Scott joined the group four years ago after moving to the area from California.

She said other members are always eager to help with any gardening issue or something as simple as a centerpiece.

“Everyone here is very friendly and willing to work with you,” she said. “They are happy to share.”
