The Clark County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit was selected as 2015 Marine Law Enforcement Program of the year at the annual Washington State Marine Law Enforcement Conference, held in Tacoma in September. One of its deputies also received two honors.
The Sheriff’s Office operates a full-time, year round marine unit patrolling 44 miles of Columbia River, Yale and Merwin reservoirs and approximately 25 miles of smaller rivers and lakes. They are all popular boating and water sport destinations that attract water enthusiasts from around the pacific northwest.
The marine unit is a regional service provider and the sole response agency for patrol and emergency response on all Clark County waters.
The marine unit is active with marine education, enforcement and safety issues, partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Power Squadron and Auxiliary and other child safety advocates to provide water safety programs to the boating public.
Deputy Sheriff Todd Baker, the lead marine deputy, was selected by Washington State Parks and Recreation as Marine Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for his work in public boating and water safety education, and as a senior instructor at the Basic Marine Law Enforcement Academy.
Baker was also presented with the Award of Merit for his contributions to boating and water safety education at the International Boating and Water Safety Summit held in Destin, Florida, earlier this year.
